Overactive Thyroid?

Seen GP today and he’s referring me for an urgent thyroid scan as have swollen thyroid and all the classic symptoms. Am heading back to GP tomorrow for blood tests and ECG but he’s said he won’t prescribe any medication until I’ve had the scan. Just wondering if anyone has had similar and how long the wait for the scan was?

If the blood test confirms overactive you need to push for carbimazole. You should be put on it straightaway and then await your scan. Your scan could take months and during that time you aren't medicated. Dangerous.

Thanks for reply. I ended up having an urgent scan within 10 days but no idea why GP wanted to see results as he still didn’t prescribe carbimazole (or even any propranolol) so I was wondering about sweating with a heart rate of 180. GP decided I had to wait until Endo appointment for the following week that never materialised to talk to them about meds. He did do bloods but not urgently so they took a week to come back and showed my T3 was 43 so then a different GP called me in a massive panic about thyroid storm and wanted me to go straight to hospital but the endocrinologist wasn’t responding so they said they’d let me know once they’d spoken to them and I never heard back so I sat at home another week. GP didn’t even arrange antibody testing as they wanted to let the hospital do it instead.

I ended up passing out in A&E and spending 4hrs in resus the following week with a heart rate of 220bpm and a high temperature, luckily blood pressure was low so it was caught in time before turning into thyroid storm. They finally gave me some carbimazole there, did the bloods including the antibodies within about 5mins of me being wheeled in. Have since had two follow up outpatient endo appointments and now I’m in the system seems much better. Have a diagnosis of Graves’ disease but with extremely overactive thyroid according to endo as he’s never seen a T3 of 43. It was all a massive shambles apart from A&E who were fantastic.

Am back on this thread today as I’ve woken up with a sore throat and feel like I’m coming down with something and can’t get through to OOH as there’s no cover in our area today. Don’t know if it’s urgent I have a blood test today to check white blood cells as Endo said it was and to arrange appointment straight away?? Should have asked what to do on a Sunday. I didn’t take carbimazole this morning and already my heart rate is 170 and I’m pouring with sweat.
