Hi all,
I have graves disease, diagnosed in January of this year. Back in about march/April, there was a bit of an issue with my GP surgery and I didn't end up getting my meds and I ended up thyrotoxic. It was about a month or so after this, that I got pregnant. I know there is risks, and there will be risks all the way through my pregnancy. I have been reading up on some stuff as I've only seen my endo once, and my consultant isn't much help. I've seen a few things about Graves babies been born early, so id like to ask, if you had a Graves baby, what gestation were they born at? I didn't have Graves (that I know of) with my other pregnancy, and ended up being induced and gave birth at 40+3 so just looking for answers of how high/low the possibility could be of giving birth earlier!

Thankyou.

One of mine was born at 41+5 and the other at 39+ something, so I was lucky and had no issues. I hope yours is just the same Smile.

Hi I was diagnosed with Graves about a year before I got pregnant with my twins. My endo suggested PTU as the safest medication and the lowest dose of 50mg a day. This carries a 2-3 per cent risk of defects but outweighs other risks of having no meds. I had hyperemisis so actually ended up not tolerating any meds at all but by month 2 my thyroid levels were even by themselves without meds. Pregnancy can actually help the situation. There was no talk about the babies being born early due to thyroid levels although I had a different issue and had to be delivered at 33 weeks. Make sure you are referred to a specific pregnancy endocrinologist. They will monitor you more regularly and check levels. They are trained quite differently to it’s quite important to be on the list for that specific type of endocrinologist. Good luck!

Hi OP. I have Graves Disease and I don't mean to scare you but I gave birth to twins around 23 weeks. My daughter miraculously survived but sadly my son lived only for four days. I don't know why they arrived so early, but Graves is one theory which rattles round my head a lot. My consultant just said twins very often do come very early, and sadly some don't survive - he doesn't blame my Graves' for their premature delivery. I've since had a thyroidectomy and we are TTC again. If you are planning a pregnancy, you need to speak to your endocrinologist and have bloods done so ensure your thyroid is as stable as you can get it.

Good luck!
