Thinking about Stoma

I have UC. I have never been in remission apart from the six week break between 40>10 prednisalone.
Am thinking of trying one last biologic (Tofacitinib) and then thinking fuck it, let’s do this. I’m 62 and fed up!
Anyone with experience, I’d really appreciate hearing from you.
Thank you!

When will you have the surgery?

I’m sure you’re feeling all kinds of feelings right now. But you are going to feel incredible when you are diseased colon, and med, free. Cake

Surgeon will be making contact in the nest couple of weeks. Will keep you posted. As it turns out the decision was out of my hands in the end, due to age and other factors.

I'm glad the decision was taken out of your hands. It sounds to me like you have had enough and that absolute piece of junk colon needs to go.

They know for sure it is not Crohn's right? Maybe that doesn't matter any more given the state of your colon.

I must confess I worry about old age with UC. I have recently been through surgery, a bad infection and a hospital stay and I feel old and weak. I am tending to think that if I ever need long term care a stoma would be the most familiar to staff.

But for now Entyvio is working. I will be sending positive IBD thoughts your way tomorrow during my infusion.

Gilead · 12/03/2021 07:26

Thank you!

No you, I hope your infusion goes well!

I shan’t miss them! I do think it’s the right thing. In many ways perhaps inevitable, if not now, later, but more or less definite.
The consultant team were expressing concerns about increased cancer risk etc.

It definitely doesn’t appear to be Crohns, looks like classic, severe left sided colitis.

Infusion done, only one jab and they got bloodwork from the same catheter.

It is a lovely sunny afternoon here with lots of daffodils coming out.

Sending you some golden sunshine and warmth.

I made this decision 5 years ago in similar situation (never achieved remission and then steroids stopped being effective) it was actually my second stoma surgery - first was not my choice and I hated it but this one I have welcomed so much , hasn’t been easy as with short vowel from previous surgeries I have ended up with kidney disease but still best decision or me and my family too

Gilead · 13/03/2021 16:07

Thank you @mrsbyers. Glad it has helped.
I’m definitely coming to terms with the idea.

Yay I’m pleased for u! Can’t wait until you feel the difference. It’s a big surgery but the relief will be incredible.

I still have my rectum at the minute but it’s in very bad shape. I’ll be having it removed shortly, currently get EUAs on it so have general as it’s so painful. I’m holding off though as I feel good right now, I’d rather enjoy the time feeling good than go for a crazy big surgery. Probably after my wedding next year!

Where PP said with flights having no hassle, I’ve had a different experience. I get taken into a room and searched every time, but it’s no big deal. They just feel around it and kind of lift it up to feel the weight. I don’t mind!

Thank you @BumDiggyDiggyDiggyBumDiggyBum. I’m holding off on the Barrie butt, according to what I’ve read, not so much trouble with UC.
