Hi all,

Having recently been diagnosed with an overactive thyroid and GP thinking it's Grave disease, I was just wondering if anyone could share their experiences with me ? I am currently waiting on an appointment for an ultrasound scan. Thank you!Smile

Just a heads up that it isn't Graves unless you test positive for TSI or TR antibodies, so your GP should be running those tests.

There can be other causes of your symptoms, including auto-immune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's Disease) which can sometimes have an overactive phase caused by a hormone dump, before it settles into underactive. Best to know what you're dealing with from the start.

Have you been referred to an endocrinologist?

Hi @NaToth sorry for late reply!
Yep at endo next week, to be honest I don't know what test GP did I was just told it shows an overactive thyroid. Also got an ultrasound the week after, so hopefully will have some answers after those appointments ! Thank you for replying

Just worth bearing in mind that a thyroid behaving overactively is not necessarily Graves and shouldn't be treated as Graves unless the correct tests have been done and the diagnosis is right. Good luck.

Also remember that you are entitled to a print out of your test results and there are lots of people here and on the ThyroidUK forum at www.healthunlocked.com who will help you learn to interpret them.

Thank you @NaToth ! That's really helpful I didn't know about the printout! Going to have a look at that site now Grin are you also lacking a working thyroid?

Mine's underactive and has been since I had glandular fever as a teenager.

It’s ‘probable’ graves until/unless you get the eye involvement and or the pre tibial myxoedema (sp?) - they’re both diagnostic but I don’t think high TRAb is. I’m feeling quite well now a few years on but it was very up and down. I was on a lot of carbimazole and what seemed like a huge dose of propranolol and we also tried irradiating it with radioactive iodine but it refused to die!
