Newly diagnosed Underactive Thyroid

Hi there, my daughter was recently (8 weeks ago) diagnosed with an underactive thyroid.
Her levels are TSH - 12.9
& FT4 6.9
She is currently on 25 mg of Levothyroxine & has had the 1st blood test since she started taking it.
We are due to go back to the GP at the end of the week to get the results of the blood test & to see if her medication need to be increased.
I was wondering if I could ask for her to be referred to an Endocrinologist, or is this something that happens automatically?

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer xx

Hi, I was 15 when diagnosed and they auto referred me bc of my age. If she's u18, symptoms aren't improving etc you'd deffo be okay to ask. My dose went from 25 to 100 at my first apt and def helped xx

Thanks caremummy, yes she is only 17. The tablets have had absolutely no effect yet. It is really difficult to find out what to do & how to get more information.

This sounds a bit, but even at 100mcg and years in I still am not 100%, it is a v long journey. It's a condition which is underdiagnosed and misunderstood- my endo advised me to change GP bc they refused to up my dose. Had also been told I was just a teenager/woman for 3 yrs pre diag. Thyroid UK have an okay website. gd luck with it x keep at it, hopefully all us hypos will be feeling better soon x

Hi @bumpsadaisy11, I was diagnosed last year with a TSH of 24 I think. It's taken me a year to get to the right level and they will increase gradually. At her next appointment she'll almost definitely get an increase. I've now been referred to an endocrinologist as I'm still having symptoms even though my levels are within range so definitely ask for a referral too if you think it'll be worthwhile. There is a great forum on Health Unlocked called Thyroid UK and there is lots of knowledgeable people on there who will be able to help and advise you as well. Wishing lots of good health to your daughter!
