Autoimmune disease
Hypothyroidism, coeliac, asthma and teeth problems, related?

Hi, apologies for what may become a long post!
I am currently under investigation for a number of things and have been newly diagnosed within the past 3-6 months with hypothyroidism and coeliac disease.
I have chronic asthma and have been seeing a respiratory consultant for 6-8 months as I'm producing a lot of mucus which the ENT specialist has said is post nasal drip due to a new allergy to trees!
When I saw the ENT specialist last week she cauterised my nose and noticed that I have a cyst on my vocal cords and need to go in to have that sorted....
My GP last Friday saw that my thyroid levels aren't reacting as they should (possible conversion issue) and so is referring me to the endocrinologist...
With me?
Okay, for the last two days I have also now had a really sore mouth, or rather teeth and gums on the lower right jaw and I know that one of my teeth above it has a hole that needs sorting and about 3-4 weeks ago one of my teeth on the other side feels like it's crumbling.... I'm only 44 and I try and look after my teeth so am not sure if this is a side effect of my conditions and meds.
The problem I have is that 1) I am frightened of anyone messing around in my mouth and worry I'll have an asthma attack through the anxiety so would rather be totally knocked out, 2) II really feel like I'm falling apart with all these issues and this just depresses me further and 3) I simply can't afford to go to the dentist!
Shoud I try and ignore the tooth issue and hope it goes away? Perhaps when all my other issues are under control it may be fine?
Is this a common problem? Could my many meds be to blame?
Alternatively, does anyone know any way of getting free dental treatment where I could be heavily sedated etc near Oxford (UK)?

Poor you. I think everyone on this section of MN finds that one initial autoimmune problem goes on to cause lots of other health issues. If I were you I'd try to get the dental work done with a sympathetic dentist. But I understand your concern about asthma. Maybe you could put out another post asking for opinions on keeping asthma under control whilst having dentistry? There must be others with this issue too.

My gum health was affected by hypothyroidism and also when ferritin is low which coeliac could cause. A dentist said the hypo can affect them particularly. You may find as things are better your gums improve. However, it could take some time. My teeth are good though.
I hope you manage to find someone who can support you.
What about visiting the dentist in stages to deal with the anxiety and become acclimatised?

Thanks, we'll finally managed to get an emergency appointment by calling 111 and then relaying to my dentist that I needed to be seen within 6 hours on Wednesday. Yo until then they were tying to fob me off for the following week but I was in so much pain!
I went in and as I could see the tooth is knackered asked if they could just extract it but they refused and started a root canal treatment. Since then it has been getting more and more painful and so I'm going back tomorrow morning (had to take today off work) and I am going to insist they just take it out!
Interestingly as I was leaving he said I needed to book a normal appointment for a check up and then the next couple of appointments for the root canal to be finished and despite me telling him I was sensitive to mercury insists that I can't have non mercury fillings on the NHS and actually if I want a successful root canal I should consider a private appointment with them for specialist treatment rather than the NHS treatment..... felt money grabbing to be honest!!

Hi op
Yes all the problems you have can be related
I have severe brittle asthma, multiple allergies, M.E fibro poor thyroid function pernicious anaemia and others
I was in a wheelchair until by chance I realised that the rash I had was in fact a gluten rash despite the drs saying it wasn't years before
It turned out I have an immuno deficiency and don't expresss antibodies
With gluten removed (and a formal diagnosis) my health including the asthma dramatically improved to the point that I walk normally now
However, the multiple vitamin and mineral deficiencies have left my once great teeth in a bad state even my root canal has collapsed, I am due to have 3 teeth extracted under ga shortly
I was offered another root canal but quite frankly I'd rather loose the tooth

I felt shocking after the coeliac diagnosis and it took and good 8 months to really feel healthy again. Years of nutrient deficiency eroded tooth enamel. I would also say get a bone density scan too so they can treat any problems asap.
Hope you feel better soon.

This is really interesting. Me, my mum and my aunt all had Grave's disease. My mum and aunt both lost all of their teeth in their early fifties due to a bone density issue. I had no idea it could be autoimmune related.

Hi
I can only comment on coeliac desires - there is an actress who is in the affair who had teeth that crumbled due to coeliac disease. She has written a book.
A couple of my teeth crumbled and I was diagnosed with asthma and had mouth issues , cold sore issues and skin issues and yes constantly seemed to be coughing up phlegm - it has taken me 3 years post diagnosis to get on the mend and now I have to loose weight again.
The good news. My asthma, skin issues including mouth cold sores and the like have all gone.
My teeth got fixed and I am fine - I nearly lost some teeth but all good with fillers now.
Just a suggestion don't go crazy in gluten free processed alternatives - I did and it does impact teeth in as they are full with sugar.
Good luck it is a long road but you will feel better eventually. Take care of yourself and be kind to yourself.
