How much different is the uk to Brisbane for crime/ tensions over immigration?

After years of dreaming of moving out we finally have a job opportunity but all of research seems to point towards Australia going down a very similar path to the UK. Wondered from people actually out there if this is just the news or very real.
How much tension is there over immigration? Crime reports of machetes? Home invasions that sort of thing. I have read a lot about the increase in crime and wouldn’t want to swap one set for another if you see what I mean.

thanks!

Congratulations on the job opportunity! I’m not in Brisbane but have friends there. In general there have been a couple of marches in Australia but it doesn’t seem to be anywhere near as bad as the UK. Cost of living has gone up and housing is obscenely expensive, but overall life is good. Better salaries, better work life balance and just generally a good standard of living. It’s hard to be angry all the time when you can chill out in the garden having a bbq with your friends for 11 months of the year.

There are good suburbs and bad ones, but overall Australia is much safer. You could ask about where to live on the Brisbane Mums Group on Facebook. Half of Australia is moving to Brisbane at the moment so people are always asking.

The news here is also very dramatic. Take what you read or hear with a pinch of salt. The ABC is similar to the BBC so is more reliable.

Thank you for the advice I will check these out. Yes I have read a fair bit that has worried me with a rise of crime and wondered if it would really be any better. I worry so
much about safety in the uk for my kids. Although I’m not keen on spiders but that’s another story!! X

Im going to be totally honest with you, crime in Australia is quite high. I haven't lived in the UK in a couple of years so can't do a proper comparison but a bad neighbourhood in Aus can be really bad. I found the news didnt report so much of what went on in Aus, and police were often very unhelpful. A certain group pretty much get away with everything, youth crime is rife so again the perpetrator gets away with is as they are young (but not any less dangerous) hearing about machette attacks is pretty common, breaking and entering both cars and homes appear to be quite common. I also found a huge issue with youths "joyriding" cars and bikes in certain areas and it was really quite dangerous at times for innocent pedestrians/other drivers etc

No point sugar coating it I guess, cost of living is absolutely crazy, house prices are absolutely crazy and buying a new home in a "good" area is pretty unattainable to most people trying to start out over there at the moment, QLD has a healthcare crisis, there is quite high crime rates

Aus has loads of good points, and used to be the land of opportunities but the reality is starting out over in Aus right now is just not what it used to be. Wages aren't necessarily higher for every occupation too, I know I was earning more in Ireland in my line of work when you convert Aud to euro. Cost of living was similar, rent dearer in Aus, Gas for car cheaper in Aus.

I am half Aussie/ half English and have lived in both and now in the UK. I would totally agree with @Applecrumble9tbh. In my experience Australia is currently no better and a lot more expensive than the UK and in the past I would have said it was worse, especially the crime rate. The reality of living in Aus is pretty stark to the image, I love to visit there but I would not move my family to live there.

Thank you. I have read a lot about the machete crime and home invasions yet when you ask people they think you are mad to wonder if there is high crime and the news coverage makes you wonder too. Just want honesty and no sugar coating!

Lived there for nearly two years. Lovely bright city with excellent restaurants but be prepared for the humidity. Winter is perfect, all other months we found unbearable. Clothes sticking to you, hair always felt wet. We moved to VIC.

I think it’s very hard to say until you live there. Regarding immigration, Australia are the masters at tough aggressive immigration, it’s where our former government leant from. And yes it divides opinion. From a human rights perspective for ethnic minorities and indigenous people Australia doesn’t do well. But depends on you and what’s important to you.
