Have you ever been through a category 2 cyclone?

What was it like? How long did it last once it made landfall? Did you feel that you should have evacuated?

I am in a northern suburb of Brisbane, Qld, Australia. And we are preparing for cyclone Alfred.

I have never experienced a category 2 cyclone before. Feeling a bit apprehensive.

Any advice would be great 👍

I'm in Brisbane too but grew up further north and have been through a Category 3 cyclone.

Our house was solid so we were fine. It came through during the night so I dozed through it. The worst part was it was very hot and humid and once the power went off, there was no airconditioning or fans. I was a teenager though, so didn't have the same level of responsibility as an adult.

My advice is follow the advice the authorities are sharing. It's unusual for Brisbane but other parts of the state get cyclones much more often so it's advice gained through experience.

Look at the flood maps. Evacuate if your house might go under, otherwise I would stay put unless your house isn't very solid or you have family or close friends with a very safe setup.

Pick where you will shelter during the worst of it. A small room with few windows is the best bet, but note the position of any big trees outside that may fall over.

Make sure you have enough drinking water to last several days, and plan to be without power, phone, internet and gas. Though the advantage of being in Brisbane as opposed to further north is that there isn't just one road in or out, so we are unlikely to face the same supply issues more regional and remote communities do after a disaster.

I hope it all goes well for you!
