First signs of Australian spring

It's been unseasonably warm and sunny here in Melbourne and I've spotted the first harbingers of spring, which doesn't officially start until 1st September:

Blowflies
Ants invading my kitchen worktops

What's it like where you are?

The wattle's all out here. That was my first sign. It smells lovely.
Lucky I don't get hayfever 😆

Superbluemoon · 21/08/2024 00:14

I walked outside onto the deck about an hour ago and my first thought was that spring has arrived this morning. The air felt softer or something.

rewilded · 21/08/2024 00:27

Autumn is close by here in England. I am jealous that you are heading into Spring!

HoppingPavlova · 21/08/2024 00:34

In Sydney and Spring has definitely arrived this week.

echt · 21/08/2024 00:41

I agree about the wattles. In the two parks (not the same as UK parks at all) where I walk my dog there must be about ten different species, which start in winter and bloom sequentially. They've abandoned it this year due to the weirdly warm weather and are going for broke all at once. They are so beautiful. I've been taking pics of each one to bore the arse off my UK friends.

Here's one - very lovely and very spiky.

It's a gorgeous day here in the South Island of NZ. Wall to wall blue sky and sunshine, and quite warm. I've just been for a walk and saw lots of spring flowers and blossom. Sunday and Monday we had a polar blast, with an icy wind and fresh snow on the mountains, but it looks as though we have now turned a corner. Hooray!!

MermaidMummy06 · 21/08/2024 03:55

I'm in QLD and the peach trees are flowering & flowers for the carnival next month are already starting to bloom. Hopefully they last!

I'm sitting outside, on lunch, and it's warm & sunny. Just lovely.

Unfortunately the lawn is enjoying the recent rain & warmth, too. It needs mowing!

coffy11 · 21/08/2024 03:59

In Qld, definitely starting to warm up now. I miss Autumn in Melbourne when it's still cool but the sky is blue and you can open all the windows to let the fresh air in.

Ishouldgodostuff · 21/08/2024 04:06

A beautiful day here in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand- blue sky with hardly a cloud. But a white frost this morning, chilly.
I live on a small farm, so all our (about) 40 ewes/sheep have lambed & their lambs are running out in the paddocks.
Lots of daffodils already, grape hyacinth, tree blossoms too.
It does seem like spring is truly here but I won't risk planting tomatoes etc for another few months - too much risk still of a late frost haha

ForGreyKoala · 21/08/2024 04:12

Oh, and I've just brought the washing in from the clothesline - bone dry.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 21/08/2024 04:15

We have rain and wind forecast for another week in Perth, but the sun is out today. Its still under 20 degrees mostly though, so spring hasn't sprung just yet. Bring it on, I am over winter!

Tradersinsnow · 21/08/2024 04:22

The jasmine is in bloom and smells divine!

DifficultBloodyWoman · 21/08/2024 04:34

I pruned my roses and saw bees in the garden. And the cherry blossoms have started coming out in the last week. (Southern Highlands, so not that late for pruning roses)

redleaves75 · 21/08/2024 05:09

24-26 degrees here in Brisbane. Foggy this morning but a beautiful day now

squishee · 21/08/2024 05:33

Last weekend I got my first touch of sunburn of the season, on a trip by the Murray. The birds know spring is in the air. Saw a snake too.

isthismylifenow · 21/08/2024 05:44

I'm not in Aus but in SA, and much the same here in my parts.

Was 27 yesterday and I'm just loving wearing short sleeves in August!

One of the best sights for me is when the trees start getting new green shoots. And I'm quite sure they don't start this early usually.

I'm not a winter fan at all, so this makes me very happy indeed. Also, it's 6.40am here and it's light already. Yay.

TerrorAustralis · 21/08/2024 06:57

Illawarra flame trees are in bloom along my street. They look lovely, but I wish they only attracted noisy birds after I wake up! The dawn chorus is getting earlier.

echt · 21/08/2024 09:21

While not quite a dawn chorus, there are several pairs of cockies toughing it out about who gets the nest hole in the tree at the bottom of my road. At the top of their lungs.
The same pair have raised four broods each year bar 2022 when it was so cold and rainy many birds fail to raise young 'uns.
It's nearly dark here and I can still hear the territorial screeching.

Dustyblue · 23/08/2024 02:20

South coast of Vic here and there are masses of blossoms on the fruit trees, early for August!

Interspersed with the usual bouts of heavy-ish spring rain. It's definitely come early.

This year in general has been peculiar weather-wise. I had cherry tomatoes in June for example, and yet I lost a few bay trees etc.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 23/08/2024 02:32

I pruned the roses two days ago and there was frost on the car this morning. 🙄

Jellybeansweets · 23/08/2024 02:38

It’s been so warm here in the South Island of NZ! First day in ages I’ve left the house without a jacket, and no cold wind! The cherry blossoms are starting to bloom, looking forward to the warmer months ahead! Came back from London a few weeks ago, was missing the sunshine in the northern hemisphere.. Spring is on its way!!!!

FiveShelties · 23/08/2024 02:45

19C here in Hawke's Bay, ornamental cherry trees full of blossom. Fantastic, long may it last.

echt · 24/08/2024 00:28

One sign of spring has been eerily absent where I am - the eruption of noisy DIY. Maybe it will arrive when the mystical alignment of the official start of spring and Father's Day occurs.

FiveShelties · 24/08/2024 07:24

I still think Spring does not start until 21st September - although I really want it to start 1st September😀

ForGreyKoala · 24/08/2024 07:55

Meteorological spring starts on September 1st and the majority of people go with that. It feels like spring here already.
