My sporting achievement

Hi, I am a kiwi who still holds records for sprinting races and relays from when I was in high school. I am 53 now and am quite unfit! I do look back at those times for inspiration!

Anyway, I just wanted an honest opinion about my partner’s response in terms of whether I am being too sensitive. We were watching the Olympics and I told my partner of my achievements and he said it was years ago as in who cares? He said you need to do more now you are older. I recognise this but just wanted him to recognise ny achievements. I was livid. Am I being unreasonable. He is not sporty. So doesn’t understand what it means. He is into paragliding and was very academic so that is where his success was.

Well, I would be impressed if my partner told me something about themselves that I didn't know, and that they were obviously proud of.

I mean, there would be a graded slope of how impressed I was - if they are records for your school, that's great, but not quite so impressive as if you held national schools and junior records, or if you made the national team and raced internationally.

However, I would still be interested and ask questions. It's all about knowing your partner better, even if it were something you weren' necessarily particularly interested in yourself.

He sounds like a killjoy. Does he have form for negging you?

Hi, Thanks for your feedback. I held national high school records in the relay and a few when I was at my high school so the relay ones I am proud of. He is getting at the fact that I haven’t kept m sporting interest up. Friends of mine enter marathons etc. I have run a half marathon but I hate long distances. I used to do 5km races in Auckland when I lived there years ago. We are very different. He sets himself goals in work and in life. So he has learnt to fly helicopters and then planes and now paragliding. In his work he is now a top of his field in law. I am not ambitious on the other hand! I have goals such as seeing the world and have travelled to over 70 countries I think for instance. I work as a teacher and have dodged going for higher levelled jobs. Tried being in charge of a large department and hated it!

OP, well done! You should be proud of your achievements, both new and older ones.

(I came third place in a long jump competition in middle school, and I'm still proud of that! And that's not even close to your achievements).
