Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice on education in Perth WA. I’m thinking about relocating there with my family, I have 3 children 9,6,3. Myself and hubby are both professionals and earn a good salary. I'm really keen to move back to Perth, however when I lived there previously my children were very young. I’m now thinking about moving back with school age children. I’m wondering how does the WA system compare to UK/Northern Ireland, are they on par. I’ve read a lot of the system in wa and I think it sounds great ie students that are much more well rounded, critical thinkers and excellent communication skills. I’ve recently read reviews saying the academic education isn’t as good as uk. I find this hard to believe. I won’t be able to afford a house in the catchment of the top public schools unfortunately, I’m wondering will my children have good opportunities in the average high school to get a good ATAR score. Or would they get more opportunities in the catholic private school? My children are doing well academically here in UK, I do however give them extra work to help their learning (not much as they seem advanced enough). I’m looking at schools near Fremantle , Bateman, applecross. I’m really keen to move but if education is an issue I’m unsure what I will do. Any kind advice would be appreciated. Any moms in a similar position or have gone through this already. Thanks😊😊😊

Most state high schools have a specialist stream or two. These are scattered around and their catchment covers the neighbouring high schools. My local is a dance school amongst other things. The next one over does basketball. As your kids move to high school, they can sit an exam or audition or whatever and be filtered into a specialist school that is usually not too far away.

Catholic schools are very good, though, but opportunities are created differently, as far as I could see (Catholic school parent here). A family member after many years teaching in non-Catholic has moved into the state sector and is thrilled with the quality of the students he is teaching. Such nice kids, I am told.

If you are really desperate to compare, then look up the latest PISA results. But, you know, Australia is a white, western country. Education is just fine.
