Vaping attitudes

Yesterday, we flew into Sydney for a holiday. DH had organised a script to use nicotine vapes. We were sitting at a cafe for a coffee outside. Been there 30mins when a ?manager came storming out, telling DH 'I don't believe it, there are children around, you can't be serious'.

We both apologised, said we had no idea what vaping with a script outside wasn't allowed, and the fact we'd flown in 12hrs earlier. It was like DH was smoking a crack pipe. Where ARE people allowed to vape in NSW? On the street, just at home, in the car???

Vaping is banned wherever cigarette smoking is banned. Thank goodness.

Key point-

  • E-cigarettes are not harm-free and may expose users and bystanders to chemicals that are harmful to health. The Therapeutic Goods Administration has not approved e-cigarettes as an aid to help smokers to quit.”

E-cigarettes - Tobacco and smoking

Electronic cigarettes are a relatively new and concerning development in smoking practices. Read more about NSW Health's stance on these devices.

Not sure why you would think having a script would make any difference, it’s still just as unpleasant for the people around you. There is a lot of talk of making vaping illegal due to the high numbers of young people vaping here but it hasn’t happened yet. Just to add to the list in the link above, if you are in a smoking section of a pub (there are lots of great beer gardens and rooftops in Sydney, try The Glenmore) you can’t eat at that table so if you order food you will have to move to the non smoking section to eat. Just in case you are wondering about “no food at this table” signs. Have a great holiday.

If you can't smoke somewhere, you can't vape there. It's the same pretty much everywhere. Not sure where you came from that's different but UK & Aus (at least) has the same rules....

It was like DH was smoking a crack pipe.

Inhaling harmful, addictive substances around children? Yes he was.

Honestly, inhalants generally are anti-social. There are fairly good harm-reduction reasons for opiates to be used in public. But not nicotine.

Thank you for the link and the info. DH stopped cigarette smoking and the vape is a short term solution for him to stop altogether.

This is clearly wrong! DH can use a vape walking outside a shop or sitting at an outside cafe seat in the UK without issue. According to the link above- its illegal in NSW.

@Flatandhappy Thank you for the info.

There were no signs saying no smoking. He at least knows where he can/can't vape now. Thanks everyone.

I don’t blame you for being surprised. I’ve come to the U.K. from Aus and was amazed at first to see so many people vaping everywhere. One of our employees was even vaping in the office until we stopped her! I see so many kids in school uniforms vaping, it’s as bad as smoking was back in the 90s.
Australia you just don’t see it as they don’t sell vapes like they do in the U.K. and hardly anyone smokes any more. It’s seen as a very anti social thing akin to smoking in Aus.

Ponderingwindow · 23/12/2023 17:55

Not Australian or from the uk, but reading mumsnet has left me very surprised that the uk allows smoking in so many places. Even my ridiculously conservative US state banned smoking near entrances to buildings years ago, effectively removing smoking from pavements . People still smoke and vape, but seeing someone do it in public in my area is shocking, not the norm.

SM4713 · 23/12/2023 19:58

I too am suprised the amount of people that vape in the UK and certainly don't condone smoking, nor taking up vape for the sake of it.

DH would never blow water vapour onto/near people, use it in a busy area nor if people were sitting nearby. The cafe in Aus had us at 1 side and 1 other table occupied on the far side of a very large, open, outdoor area. Maybe 6 tables between us and them, not near the cafe entrance, nor on a pavement with passers by. It was just a shock, no signs- but her clearly knows where not to use it now.

Grin. 'Water vapour'? I get that you want to minimise it. What he's DOING though is using a device for administering addictive substances in front of children. And they reek. If it was just water vapour, no one would care. It's not though. Someone shooting up heroin isn't even blowing water vapour but I'm fairly sure you don't want it around kids. And addiction to nicotine kills masses more people than heroin.

Seeing people vape encourages children.

SD1978 · 23/12/2023 22:25

@SM4713- it's banned here near any shopping centre doors, cafes that don't allow smoking (pretty much all of them now) and anywhere near play parks.....I don't realise the rules here were stricter, but probably worth looking them up. The answer is basically nowhere near where people may be- although obviously that doesn't stop some people doing it regardless. The rules here changes a few years ago to be much stricter and basically see both as equally 'bad'
