I have recently joined a sewing class and would like to make the trousers below (wide leg version) in a drapey fabric in a sort of beige/mole colour any recommendations please? closetcorepatterns.com/products/mitchell-trousers-pattern

Don’t want anything too stiff or too hard to iton just wanted them to fall nicely.

Suggest ordering some samples

CharlieChaplin99 · 23/09/2025 13:54

Thanks gorgeous colour. I usually steer away from wool as I have quite sensitive itchy skin.

Go into a fabric shop and show them the pattern and they can advise you?

It's only a tiny percentage. If you look around for similar "trouser" material, you will probably find a poly viscose twill or suiting fabric, about 250gsm (grams/square metre) is about right.

LoveSandbanks · 23/09/2025 14:10

The pattern suggest a twill or a wool crepe. Wool crepe is gorgeous but very expensive (about £50pm). I’d suggest a crepe with a mix or even a polyester crepe. Be careful not to get anything too light (especially if buying online). I’ve got a viscose crepe which would absolutely not be suitable as it’s far too light.

Are you able to get to a real life fabric shop?

Not all wool is itchy, wool crepe definitely isn’t.

gerispringer · 23/09/2025 14:12

I would go for a cotton/ viscose mix and avoid polyester.

gerispringer · 23/09/2025 14:13

Or cotton/ linen mix

WildCherryBlossom · 23/09/2025 14:15

Also worth looking at Linen Viscose blend. You would assume it needs lots of ironing but not necessarily.

If you look up the pattern on Minerva’s website https://www.minerva.com/ there may be different versions made in a variety of fabrics which is pretty helpful.

My sewing class is above a fabric shop so we get to browse whilst in the class and the teacher guides us on the best sort of fabric for our patterns.

Have you started the class yet? How experienced a sewer are you?

ScrollingLeaves · 23/09/2025 14:26

I think super fine cotton needle cord (fine wale corduroy) would look nice and fall well.

I think the pattern is quite structured as well as wide legged and drapey.

It's worth searching on dead stock suiting fabric too, you can get bargains in neutral colours and its perfect for trousers

Thanks, I have this morning and we only have one fabric shop and the selection is pretty dismal (more aimed at quilters) but some overly floral stuff, thick boucle or heavy denim so I will have to order online.

I would and did but we only have one fabric shop which is more of a quilting place I have updated above.

Edited

I have a paper pattern and have looked at the back of the pattern and under fabric it states recommendations for a structured look or a softer effect which I prefer and it recommends tencel twill or wool crepe.

I like the way the trousers hang/drape on the photo but not the colour what sort of fabric would you say that is and I can order online.

The pattern photo looks to me like a linen blend. You could always email Closet Core and ask. A lot of the smaller indie pattern design companies are super friendly and helpful.

Alternatively, If you look at the Minerva website, quite a few people have made them in this stretch twill. It comes in loads of colours, has a nice drape and seems to suit the pattern very well.https://www.minerva.com/mp/GBP/1/MM-4113-M/MM-4116

Timeforabitofpeace · 26/09/2025 10:22

@CharlieChaplin99wool fabric like that is unlikely to be itchy.

Voydesimp · 20/01/2026 18:06

I’ve had good luck with soft polyamide blends for trousers like that, since they hang nicely without feeling heavy. I used a similar drapey knit from novaknitting.com once for a loose pair of lounge bottoms, and the flow was spot on. For a beige or mole shade, something with a bit of weight and a smooth hand makes the wide leg look intentional rather than stiff.

gerispringer · 20/01/2026 18:20

Ive made trousers like that and used a medium weight cotton/ viscose in a herringbone pattern. Fabrics Galore have s good selection of dressmaking fabrics
