Im wanting to do messy play with my LO as he loves doing things and we've got the treasure basket etc. Has anyone done messy play that can share their ideas please?

I wouldn't. A 5 month old will be just as happy with clean play. And he will probably be putting everything in his mouth. Blow some bubbles for him?

ohmeohmy · 15/06/2010 16:08

shaving foam (simple unperfumed stuff) is fun, mix cornflour with water...very messy

MrsBadger · 15/06/2010 16:10

plain water is lots of fun too

Sonilaa · 15/06/2010 16:10

would wait until he does*t put everything in his mouth anymore.

IMoveTheStars · 15/06/2010 16:11

yeah, I wouldn't bother tbh. bubbles sound like the best plan

If you want to, then painting is always a favourite, hand prints etc. cover EVERYTHING though and use washabout paint. be prepared for blue hair for a day or so

squeaver · 15/06/2010 16:19

God, why would you want to?

grapeandlemon · 15/06/2010 16:22

Isn't 5 month too young for messy play? - everything will just go in the mouth and it will defeat the object of "play" to have to keep saying "no not in the mouth......" iyswim

Pheebe · 15/06/2010 20:36

5 months, mine were barely sitting up at this age let alone 'playing'

maybe water and tupperware or perhaps crinkly paper (newspaper, tin foil etc) for cruching, ripping and shredding

Habbibu · 15/06/2010 20:39

Give it a month and do baby-led weaning. You'll have all the mess either of you could ever desire.

chegggersplayspop · 15/06/2010 20:40

In a month you will be weaning and then it gets really really messy (and should be fun for you both). I would leave it til then. At this age everything goes into the mouth so it would be preferable if its actually meant to. If my 6 month old gets hold of newspaper I end up fishing big globs of it out of his mouth to prevent him from choking.

Spoil sports...

Mix up some different colours of Angel Delight and scoop them onto a plastic tray. Your LO can swirl his hands about in it and make patters. If he/she puts it in his/her mouth, it's not poisonous, at least (just full of additives...).

I second cornflour - another non-poisonous idea.

Try an aquadraw mat as well, with wet hand and foot prints. Not messy as such but still fun.

Once your LO is weaning, you can do all sorts of squishing and smooshing with various foods. Fun

I think messy play is great for this age group - it gets them past potential squeamishness over food textures and actually just being messy when they're weaning, which can be an issue for some. Not mine, I hasten to add. I wish she was a little more particular about being clean, tbh.

Thanks everyone.

I am crazy i know wanting to create mess with a 5 month old but he will be 6 months next week and we did some when we were out and about last week and seemed to enjoy it.....or maybe i was the one who enjoyed it the most

jelly

spaghetti

flour and water

GormlessHeart · 18/06/2010 10:49

I would wait. Skip purees when weaning and you will have mess 3x daily to your hearts' content!

On a hijack note (sorry!) where can you get washable paints?? ELC no joy.

gillybean2 · 21/06/2010 02:29

give him a washing up bowl of water in the garden. Don't leave him on his own or look away however briefly though.
May be more clean than messy, but my ds loved sitting in the water bowl, scooping it out, using cups and seives etc in it.
Lots of fun. And for even more fun give him the hose pipe to fill it up with and swish about.

Newbeginning1 · 21/06/2010 19:04

Thanks everyone. I'm going to try doing some playing out in the garden with him over the next few days as he will be 6 months this week. I've got him some flour shakers etc so that will be fun for him with water etc.

gillybean2 · 02/07/2010 20:52

So how did it go? Was it a success? DId you put flour in the shakers and then add to water or did you put water in them? Water play in this heat seems like a very good option!

KnottyLocks · 03/07/2010 00:39

Jelly in a washing up bowl. Have the bath run ready

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 03/07/2010 00:50

yogurt on a plastic plate (not too much though)
