I'm like this with a sewing machine. I quite like sewing by hand though; just useless with a machine.

me to thats why i really wanted to learn to use a machine so i could start making curtains and things for around the house all though at this rate the only place my machine will be going is out the window lol

Sounds to me as though either the machine's needle is not threaded correctly or the bobbin is not inserted properly.

I would start by checking your threading both the top thread and the bobbin correctly.....do you have a manual?

Once threaded correctly, check your top tension - you'll probably have a dial. I'd set it somewhere in the middle to start with. Put in a new needle too. I'd also check where the feed dogs and the bobbin are for excess lint or stray threads too....they could stop your machine working properly.

Is your bobbin wound properly too? If its too loose you'll have no lower tension. Does the thread spool off in the corrent direction too - some machines are clockwise, some counter-clockwise.

Not familiar with your particular machine, but hope that helps!

Have you tried www.thesewingforum.co.uk? I recently joined and they're really lovely and helpful!

its definately a tension problem as lk states. also what sort of fabric are you trying to sew. anything sheer or very heavy can aslo produce the same probs.

do you have a local sewing machine service place nearlby? you could pop in and ask them what they think it might be. if its just incorrectly threaded (easy to do for even the pros not looking properly) they might fix it for free.

once you have it threaded corectly you will be able to sew all these things quite well.

I find that some thread is better than others. There's one brand I have in my sewing basket that constantly jams. New needle makes all the difference too.

I have a process when my machine goes wonky:

  • change needle
  • rethread top bit
  • adjust tension
  • take out bobbin and put back
  • rewind bobbin
  • take bobbin area apart and clean thoroughly

at some point in that process it starts working. More often than not there's a problem with the way I have threaded it. Good luck!
