This may be a strange question but I htink nothing is too strange for mumsnet so here goes ...
Has anyone tried making large floor cushions from rugs? We have been looking at kilim type floor cushions but they are ££££, s o I wondered if you could sew 2 rugs (the sort of cotton-y flatweave tyep) together and ut a cushion inner in? Would I just need a really big needle?

basically, yes!
There would be more trouble getting a cushion inner, I would get an old single duvet and sew a calico 'pillowcase' type cover for it, and then sew 2 rugs together, or fold one in half and sew up sides.
Make sure you leave an opening or a zip/poppers so that you can remove the cover for cleaning if when it gets food/drinkg spilt on it...
I haven't made floor cushions but have made a large bean bag out of a cool tablecloth. It got destroyed though!

a nice big piece of foam would be a very comfy inner

I made a floor cushion like this. I bought a piece of high impact foam and wrapped it in a ingle feather duvet from a charity ahop, then made an inner from a duvet cover - also from the charity shop. Remember to sew the duvet firmly round the foam - I didn't and it slipped around and I had to take it apart and do it again.

Thanks for all your replies. I need to go to Dunelm anyway so will look there. The duvet inner is a good idea.
