Roller blind kits - anyone used one?

I've seen roller blind kits for about a tenner that include all the bits you need, stiffening solution for your fabric, glue, fittings etc. I have quite a lot of stashed furnishing fabrics and am thinking I might try my hand at making a roller blind or two to replace some curtains that I don't like anymore.

Is this madness, really fiddly etc, and should I just buy a ready made blind?

I am fairly good at crafty things and sewing but a bit rusty recently.

I am not crafty / good at sewing but think as SAHM I should be, so took apart existing roller blinds, hemmed and edged some fabric and stapled them on to the roller. They look great! Only mistake was measuring from top to bottom of window and not leaving enough material to cover the roller as well so looks a bit naff when pulled down to the bottom but I can live with it!

Did you staple the fabric to the existing fabric on the roller blind, or remove the old fabric and replace it? I've actually got a couple of blackout blinds that I never used, I'm now wondering if I could somehow stick or staple my furnishing fabric over the blackout material?

Interesting, thanks!

I took the old fabric off. The fabric I used was thick cotton (deckchair type) so didn't need lining / stiffening.
