Decorating eggs. Help!!

Dd age 5 and ds age 7 would like to take part in the school's egg decorating competition this year - normally I avoid it as I am not arty/crafty at all!

Ds wants to do 'Pokemon eggs' and dd 'pretty eggs.' I will just hard boil a few eggs then we decorate them and make a display.

Would felt tip pens/paints be best?

I think dying them in coloured water will give you an all over colour, then maybe paint, use egg cups to hold them up right.

When in girl guides we made some very pretty eggs, by gluing quarter shapes of material () a bit like that, and then ribbon over the joints, with loops to hang them from.

You will either have to hard boil them of blow them

You could also do a glaze, with layered tissue paper, using whatever colours you like, a bit like papier mache, but with tissue paper, crepe paper, and a water pva

I am no expert but I would say paint.

Trimmmer - You can stick things onto the egga as well to make faces use stick on wobbly eyes for example. Pom poms & sequins would be good for making them interesting. If you hard boil them with some food colouring you will get a good all over colour to start from as a base! There are some good ideas & 'how to' here

Sorry, dodgy link! Better link

the best tip is to start with white eggs if you can get them, esp if you need yellow for a Pikachu egg

the tissue paper patchwork style looks effective even if done messily, iyswim

You can also get platic or styrofoam eggs at craft shops like Hobbycraft which might stop your DC breaking the eggs as they are decorating them. They can be painted & covered in tissue etc. Would also save you from pfaffing around blowing or hard boiling eggs! Unless of course they have to use real eggs!

Thanks for replies all - I can't avoid crafty activities anymore, we will start the eggs this week.

Sorry its taken me so long to get over here to reply trimmer my addition to all da brill advice is use duck eggs as they are bigger so ya can get more on em! also wud ds consider a spider man theme? if ya painted or dip dyed one red then when dry use use a black felt tip pen to do spider webs or a bumble bee one? paint yellow dry then either paint or black felt tip da black stripes, stick on two bobiley eyes use black lil pipe cleaners for da antena & a pricker/tail... for a fairy princess one ul need wings of course! mayb ya cud use tin foil wrapped around wing shaped cardboard but outs? Stick on back & a lacey tutu on the front wit a lil star wand on one side, silvery glitter is a must im sure il think of more weather they'l be any good is another question...

I get my eggs from either Hobbycraft - bit pricey, though] or The Works for the polystyrene ones. I have found that acrylic paints cover them best.
You can also get sequins and special short pins to attach the sequins to the eggs.
