Please can any hookers come and have a look and see if it makes sense for me? thanks!
Tis here

Am going to ravel it but not until I have had someone look and say it looks ok, bit nervous on showing it to everyone

Are the instructions UK or US (I am guessing UK)? And what is "picto"? Do you mean picot?

Bumperlicious · 13/03/2010 16:13

Just having a look (I promise I will get that book out to you btw!), so far so good though you haven't suggested what sort of age it is for, but I guess would fit a wide range - they look fab though

JackBauer · 13/03/2010 16:22

Bugger. picto = picot yes,

They should be in UK but I am used to using US so might have had an issue writing it.

I didn't put an age, so far I have given them to 2-6 yr olds and made myself some for hallowe'en [eternal child]

It's funny, they take me under an hour to make including sewing in ends (which I hate) but it took me hours to write out the pattern and it looks really confusing!

Sorry, thanks btw!

Ooh, I don't know how to do a picot.

Let me pick your brains then, what would you make for friends who have just had or about to have a baby, when you aren't up for something like a blanket. I've just made a bumble bee rattle which is pretty cute, but want other (quick) ideas.

SweetEm · 13/03/2010 18:08

crochet bootees - see this pattern by mamachee - can buy patterns from her on ravelry as well as etsy. She does cute hats and other bootee styles too.

SweetEm · 13/03/2010 18:10

and picot is chain 3 slip stitch in first of 3 chain

JackBauer · 13/03/2010 19:38

A linky is always fun, like a loop with a loop attached, hang on, shall see if I can find a pic.
Ooh, here quite satisying to make and a bit different.
I also make bunny buddy blankets they make up very quickly and if you buy a cheap rattle from a charity shop you can dismember it (don't let the children see that bit...) and stick the rattley bit in it's head1

And picot is as SweetEm said! Those booties are cute

I have made one of your masks this evening - I made the cats eye one and I am a bit confused.

I am working round without ever turning the work so that looking at the mask you see the 'right' side of all the stitches. Is this correct?

So in round 5 the "tr in rest to centre" means I am trebling for 19 stitches and these 18 are at the bottom of the eye mask.

Then assuming, for round 6, that I am next crocheting the bottom of the other eye why would I only tr 11 before the shaping? Shouldn't I be trebling 18 so that the shaping is symmetrical?

I think it would be really useful to know how many stitches you should have after each round.

Hope this is helpful.

JackBauer · 13/03/2010 22:34

Thanks for trying it out, will have another go tomorrow + count properly. The cats eyes bits should be in the upper corner and you should be working along the top edges for themso i must have buggered up a count somewhere, sorry. That does help me out. Like i said, it's my first go wtiting something, not as easy as I thought it would be, obviously!

Bums. Meant to add, would it help if there were photos for each stage as well or would that irritate?
Thanks!

So the rounds should be worked in a figure of 8 pattern - around the top of each eye hole first? I was going round and round as if it were circular. So for round 5 I crocheted the top of the LHS eye (as you look at it) first but around the bottom of the RHS eye first.

I think the instructions imply this is right as in round 5 the "tr each in next 2, 2tr ea in next 2" comes after the picot stitch shaping and in round 6 the "2tr in next 2 stitches, tr in next 2" comes before the picot shaping.

I don't think photos of each stage would be irritating - a lot of blogs do this and it is helpful for less experienced crocheters.

Hope not coming across as too critical! Tis good pattern, but I think it is best to assume you are having to explain it to idiots! Too much info better than too little, imo.

p.s. after rounds 1 and 2 I have 33 stitches for each eye hole. after rounds 3 and 4 I have 37 stitches for each eye hole.

JackBauer · 14/03/2010 14:06

No, not figure of 8, round the outside. So you go from centre to top of 1st eye, round the bottom of 1st eye, bottom of 2nd side and then round the top of 2nd side.

Not too critical at all, it's a massive help as I have no-one to test patterns on in RL, I have been following the pattern but then I wrote it so I know what I meant, which might not be what it says!
I have 'made up' a few things and am wanting to write out patterns for them, god only knows why I chose this as my first!

Will take photos later and have another go, thanks so much. will be sick of bloody eye masks soon

Have done another and redone pattern so there are only 2 rounds and less stitches (nothing to do with DD1 not being well and me losing count...). Did manage to take photos as well so will update blog in a bit.
WHile doing it I realised something, when I dc into a chain I always crochet into the back loop, never the 'V' part of the stitch. If you crochet into the 'V' part it won't work!

Please tell me this is what you do?!

OP posts:
SweetEm · 14/03/2010 17:08

Have you got the Happy Hooker book? When I crochet into a chain I always use the method she describes as "crocheting into the centre of the V" on page 31, so under the top loop of the V and the back loop. Just tried under both strands of the V and can't actually do it!

JackBauer · 14/03/2010 20:09

Yeah I had the book, leant it to a friend ages ago (never again!) I only go under teh back loop so it leaves a nice V on the outer edge of the work but then the way you do it shoudl work too. Bums! (It's impossible to go under the V's without it taking hours

Am stuck here all night now anyway so will load up blog page and see if the pics make it any clearer. Have only done it clearer for the normal one which is smaller than I have been aking it but I figure starting small might be wise!
