Mainly on where to buy things cheaply, also where to buy downloadable background papers, where I can get character papers or embellishments such as Peppa pig or something. also wooden/chipboard letters.

Thanks

I also like making my own cards, so much nicer than sending shop bought ones! Especially at christmas, although I have to start them at the beginning of November as I'm so slow it takes me weeks!

For embellishments I often keep old cards that people have sent me and recycle the pretty bits on a new card to someone else, and use character wrapping paper as backing paper as you get a whole roll of paper for the same price as a few craft sheets in a pack. Such a cheapskate!

Also, just an idea, but for my birthday my mum bought me a subscription to 'Making Cards' magazine and they give you free backing papers every month and loads of ideas and patterns etc (I think you can buy it in some craft shops too). I'm not sure if we're allowed to post external links and stuff on Mumsnet, so apologies if this isn't allowed, but the website is www.makingcardsmagazine.com

Thanks CakeBuddy. I've sold my first mothers day card today, very proud of myself hehe.

Good idea about using wrapping paper

I have creative cardmaking mag at the moment, what is the Making Cards mag like?
Thanks x

Does your town have a £1 shop?? I went in ours the other day and there were embellishments in there which were much cheaper than in the craft shops!

Other than that I just pick things up in craft shops when I see them, but I too might give that magazine a go (though I will have to hide it somewhere!!!).

the docrafts website has a good gallery & there is also a chat forum.

This is a good site for templates for shaped cards - i have done a couple of big birthday cards using these templates.

Craftwerk cards stuff is lovely & the £10 goody bags look good value although i have never ordered one.

I go to the odd class run by my local craft shop - although most of the others that attend seem to have grandchildren older than me! (and im not that young myself)

I much prefer creative cardmaking for the free papers, they are always really modern & good quality, However Making Cards tends to have better techniques & card ideas but I have never used the papers - I find them a bit too flowery & old fashioned for my taste.

Also a lot of the magazines that are sold in the high st stores (rather than craft stores) have free papers and templates that you can download without buying the magazine, Papercraft inspirations, craft beautiful are just a couple that i have downloaded from.

When I got started I used QVC (tho its addictive) they do great starter kits that have a bit of everything ranging from kits where its fairly obvious how you put all the bits together to make a card to kits where you get lots off different stuff and have more freedom. When you check out the prices of the stuff individually in the shops you often get a bargain, tho some stuff is expensive, but thats where my chipboard alpahbets came from and adhesives. I also like the madaboutcards website too, artymiss was good but think thats been taken over by craftbarn or something. £1 shops are good too and ebay for odds and ends.
