What in the world can I make my grandpa?

He is 92, as active as he can be, a lot more mentally active than physically now.
he is living ina nursing home and my granny died a few years ago. I haven't seen him since the funeral as he has asked us not to take DD's in and it is too far to go without them (it's literally the other side of the country)
I need to send him something, I want to make him something. Any ideas?
I can crochet fairly well, I can sew adequattely. I cannot knit. or do papercraft ona level above that of DD1's (she is 4)

TIA

Blanket? Shawl (don't old men wear shawls?).

What about something that he can make himself? There are nice marquetry sets or model kits that he may enjoy making.

does he like boats or planes? make him an airfix kit they're fun, i'm hoping to get the bismark

i think i'd get the kids to make him a drawing either on paper or fabric - if on paper then transfer it to fabric and embroider over the lines in a simple manner and make into a cushion case.
In fact you could get a plain cushion case and kids could work straight onto that with fabric pens. My son has made lots of tote bags in that way like this

He loves boats and planes, was in teh Navy and the RAF in the war. can't do anything like airfix as he actually made those miniature engines in his home workshop, down to making the machines to make the parts correctly, so I would never live up to him!
Like the embroider idea, I have that in one of my books actually.

he's not really an old man IMO, he wears a natty cravat and always carries his knife on his belt (he says he will claim dementia should he be stopped by teh police)

Am trying to make him a DVD of girls but it isn't working, grrrr.

A fleece blanket? Two large pieces of fleece, make fringes round the edge and tie together? You can buy lots of nice different colours - maybe a tartan on one side and red on the other. No sewing required.
