What to make for a new babe's nursery

I'm due to go on mat leave in April and I would love to make something for my new babe's nursery. I am knitting a blanket( a collection of purl stitch squares, I cant do knit stitch yet ) I was thinking of doing a nice cross sitch picture I could frame? What else could I make?

Were having a boy and dont have a theme really. It's a cream room in a loosely traditional home and I'm not very into blue if that helps.

Can anyone help or inspire me?

Making a mobile is nice - high contrast kinetic style, or photos of family.

I did something based on this:
Jan Andrea's high contrast mobile (you'll find lots of other home projects here if you're any good at sewing).

But there's also this:
DIY high contrast mobile

Just make sure whatever you do is out of reach of baby, never a good idea to mix string/cord and small children...

Have fun!

Echo the idea of a mobile, I made one for ds from brightly coloured foam card which I cut into fish shapes and put large black/white eyes on them (as he liked staring at the eyes on his lamaze bath toys!) so there was the contrast of the bright colour & the black/white and he loved it.

I decorated DS2's nursery with trees painted on the walls and a blue sky celing... I then sewedi birds out of all different fabrics, put on buttons as eyes, and stuck them on the tree branches. They are lovely, if I do say so myself

this book has proved useful for me - v simple patterns but useful stuff

BessieBoots - that DOES sound lovely .

I had a couple of charm packs of fabric kicking around (5 inch squares), so I cut triangles out of those, made some bias binding from other fabric to attach them to and ended up with a string of bunting. The nice thing was the fabrics are "conversational" prints, so there's lots of "where's the fish", "where's the trumpet" that we can do now that DD is a little older.

I made for a baby room in the nursery i work out, a rainbow ribbon mobile, using a stiching hoop thing tied a series of ribbons, around the edge then hung from the ceiling that was 6 years ago, and all the babies that have passed through have loved it.

A friend made an alphabet of cross stitch animals for her friends baby.

I bought some wooden letters from Ebay and painted them all different colours with little white daisies on.

lots of ideas for things to buy here but i reckon a lot of this could be made (especially if you know the name!)

If it is just plain squares turn the purl ones over and you will have knit!

sparklyrainbow · 10/03/2010 18:00
