Knitting a blanket

I am such a slow knitter that dd has grown out of everything I've ever started for her. I have so many unfinished projects lol!!

So, I'm going to undo them all so they don't make me feel guilty and start knitting squares to turn them into a blanket. Perhaps it will be for my grandchildren - who knows

Any hints or tips on how to turn it into something nice one day?

Whenever I start to knit something for DS I do it at least a couple of sizes too big, and he's still usually grown into it by the time I finish!

There are lots of nice blanket knitting books if you want interesting patterns (the Debbie Abrahams ones on Amazon are quite fun), but lots of plain knit squares would be lovely too. I've just finished one that would look nice in lots of colours, and was really easy (I'd never attempted cables or anything before I started it, but it wasn't too intimidating due to being done in squares, so if one went horribly wrong it wasn't a disaster!). I blogged about it here if you want to take a look.

that is usually my plan with things for dd hopefully!
What a gorgeous blanket - very inspiring

if I get a move on I'm hoping that it could become dds guide blanket. (even if it will be mostly pink!)

could I then line it with fleece to make it even warmer?

You definitely could back it with fleece, lots of tutorials online, but you could probably figure it out. Good thing with fleece is that if you can't be bothered to hem it, it doesn't unravel!

I absolutely love this blanket, which she backed with fabric, but you could do the same thing with fleece.

that is gorgeous!

excellent - I have a new project

yes i knitted my own blanket of 100 squares.i used luuurvely cashsoft wool (that cost loads!) but when it is all sewn up and edged it will be very snuggly.

my next project is to do a felted wool blanket, but i am waiting until the car boot sales start for the summer to build up my stock of felted wool.

but i do think everyone needs to make at least one blanket in their life. they are such beautiful things to treasure.

well done Hf on yours it looks very nice. what wool did you use?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/02/2010 08:25

wow moo - that sounds gorgeous.
I settled on 6" squares. It took 3 attempts before I ended up with something that was going to end up being 6" It has a long way to go before it becomes my first square!

i think you should just knit them in whatever size they come out. knitted wool is stretchy so its not hard to make them fit together. alternatively you could knit some narrow strips to fill the gaps. it could look nice and patchworky that way.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/02/2010 21:01

now that sounds like a plan!!

yes so go for it. it will look good in the end.

I used merino wool for mine also very ££££, but so soft and snuggly! And it's been treated with godknowswhat to make it machine washable.

I am crocheting a blanket at the moment only the first row was a little tight and i should have unravelled but i was too far on....... I have a feeling it will be rhombus shaped

moocowme · 21/02/2010 19:50

just crochet some triangles for both ends in a contrasting colour. it should look nice.

DuffyMoon · 21/02/2010 19:54

Like bunting for each end do you mean ? Trouble is, it is striped using 8 colours so will have to come up with a ninth colour.

I've finshed a square, but I've forgotten how to cast off
