Hi,

I make cards and am thinking of trying to sell them.
I know its highly competetive and am not likely to make more that a bit of pocket-money, but would be interested to know of anyone who is making money and how?

Thanks

my twin sister make cards that are really good by using ribbon shapes and sequins . she sells them for a pound each at the church on weekends you could make weeding invites i got a sample of a few when i register to get married from register office , shop ones don t have personal touch which i think is needed for special occasions

Not at all the same field, but I do, yes. I turn vintage textiles (cotton scraps, old clothes) into quilts etc. I'm able to turn a profit from it by:

  • working a lot in the evening, as well on my whopping 2 half days of childcare a week
  • being religious about my budgets, both business and personal (I earn a lot less than I would in a proper job, no doubt about it)
  • being really really pernickity about quality - if people aren't really impressed with the quality, they won't come back for a second look.

I am thinking of making patterns and selling them. i just don't think i would make much knowing how much time goes into some of the things i do but making patterns and selling instructions is what i would like to go into.

Moocowme, what about assembling 'kits', so make patterns and instructions and add materials and tools (depending on craft). The people who run my knitting group sell a lot at local craft fairs. The key is to make something that looks fab but is cheap/easy to make. They make tea cosies, scarves, broaches, that sort of thing.

They also sell in local shops. I also saw today in the local museum shop some ceramic crafts by another lady who goes to the knitting group. Do you have anywhere local you could approach? Could you do school fetes etc.?
