Can anyone tell me what happens if you knit a pattern with the wrong weight of yarn?

e.g. a DK jumper or hat pattern with chunky yarn. Is it bigger all over, or does it come out weirdly proportioned?

Thanks!

In proportion but bigger, IME.

Both, depending on pattern and stitch.

You could translate it into other yarn if you know how many stitches/rows per 10 cms both yarns have but that takes a better mathematician than me!

Also depends on needle size, thicker yarn will make a thicker fabric on same needles used for thinner yarn. Knit a small sqaure and you will be able to measure guage to see if you can convert the pattern
