I am ho0ping to make a wee bonnet for dd2. and I am a near beginner. what does this mean? "slip one stitch knitways." It s a the beginning of all the knit and purl rows.
TIA

It means instead of knitting the first stitch on every row you slip it over from the left to the right needle and then start knitting in the second stitch. On the purl rows, slip the stitch over then bring the wool around to purl the rest of the row.

Hope this makes sense

Knitways would mean that you put the needle into the stitch from underneath (as you would do for a plain stitch) then transfer as dizzy says, and purlways would mean that you put the needle into the stitch from the top (as you woud do for a purl stitch) then transfer.

It's usually "knitwise" (or "purlwise") - two different ways of slipping a stitch where you stick the needle through the loop either as if you were about to knit it (i.e. from front left to back right) or to purl it (from back right to front left), depending.

Doing this at the start/end of a row will give you a nice edge which is great for picking up stitches from later on.

Thanks everyone. I will have to pick up stitches later and I imagined that was the reason why. will start project today and hopefully complete it before new year.
