Hello Arts & Crafts MNers. I've never posted in this section of the site before, but I have read some threads and I am in awe of your talent!

I work in social care, and I was sent an email today looking for sewers to make "wiggly bags", which are used for children who are getting chemo. I thought it was something that some of you would be interested in doing.

Unfortunately, the instructions I have for the bags are in a pdf document. I'll try and link it...

OK, here goes...

From Sarah Hill

Does anyone know how to sew??? If you do you could make a huge difference in the life of a child with cancer - 1 in 300 children in the UK will develop cancer before the age of 16. A central line, or 'wiggly' becomes a child's best friend as it means the end of needles when a child needs bloods taking or medicines to be given. The tube sits inside a little bag that the child has tied around their neck - the bags become a lifeline as they give kids the freedom to do things like run around, play or have a bath. They also mean that parents don't have to worry quite so much about the child's line getting pulled as they get on with being children...

We need wiggly bags - they are hard to get hold of! They are easy to make and make such a difference. We send out wiggly bags to kids that ask for them - the ones we send depend on whether the child is a boy or girl, their age and whether they ask us for a certain colour. If you know anyone that has the time to make even a few bags for us we would be so chuffed! They love bright, colourful, pretty, gorgeous bags too... this is a hint that kids don't like brown, boring wiggly bags!! Some people we know have even cut up old pyjamas to get certain fabrics - a Thomas the Tank Engine wiggly bag made one little boy grin from ear to ear and it didn't take much to make!!

Sarah

Great thread, bump.

SantaClausImWorthIt · 22/12/2009 20:59

Why on earth, I wondered when I first read the thread title, are we talking about arts and crafts and sewage?!

MrsMuddle · 22/12/2009 22:24

Hmm, yes... I think I'll email MN Towers and ask them to change the title.

Once xmas is out of the way I'll have a go at making a few of these. Need a bit of practice with my sewing machine so these will do the job!

MrsMuddle · 23/12/2009 21:14

Thankyou, chaosisawayoflife, and a hopeful bump for any other crafty people.

I'm up for it in the New Year - do you have a picture you can link to of the finished article? Need to picture it properly...

JackTheHallsWithBauersOfHolly · 27/12/2009 19:26

Oh cool, I am up for this, have loads of fabric for kids, monsters, fairies, mermaids etc.

Although I thought you meant sewers too, I thought you ahd made some dodgy liquid or soemthing

MrsMuddle · 27/12/2009 21:42

No, I don't have a picture. I have no connection with Sarah Hill at all - I'm just forwarding an email that I got at work. When I'm back in the office on 5 Jan, I'll email her and see if there's a photo of the finished product. Many thanks.

I have googled and here's a picture of them on someone's blog here. Hope this helps.

First ever post! Have already whipped up a few of these, and have plans for many more. Does anyone have any idea how many might be needed at the moment? Suspect that with "the power of Mumsnet" they might be innundated...???

MrsMuddle · 02/01/2010 15:24

No idea, LolaSommersMum - I just got the information from a newsletter at work. I guess if they're inundated, they'll just keep a supply.

Thanks very much for doing this.
