A bespoke project... sort of!

I popped into my local knitting / wool shop to ask their advice for my project and they had a pattern.. anyway

I am making DS a little pouch / bag for his christmas present (an ipod) so it only needs to be 1.5 inches wide by about 2 or 3 inches tall...

I have got some lovely turquoise double knit acrylic yarn stuff and have cast on - I will continue the project in garter stitch but as I've only ever knitted a 6 inch square (that was a bit rubbish) how do I sort out the tension?

I want it to look good - but obviously I'm a total novice...

any help greatly appreciated

I have a pattern for this kind of thing somewhere. How big is the Ipod?

awastingamanger · 10/12/2009 21:39

I did one a couple years ago when starting out and literally just knitted a couple of rows to check the size against the ipod. If it's not right, pull it out and do it again.

Did the pattern specify a tension?

I know this won't help, but I've only ever knitted a tension square in my life. I really just don't bother.

Given the small size of what you're knitting, I would just start knitting, write down how many stitches you're working on, and how many rows you've knitted. When you've finished, if it's too big, give it to a friend with an i-phone . If it's too small, give it to a friend for their pet mouse to sleep in.

Either way, once you've knitted one, you'll know whether you need to cast on more, or fewer stitches, and knit more, or fewer rows.

See, I told you it wouldn't help!

doh, you said.

Measure Height of ipod exactly in cm.. Cast on 2 sts for every cm on 3.5 to 4mm needles. Knit a few rows and see if it's as long as the ipod is tall. (You are knitting it sideways). If too small start again with more or fewer sts I'm sure you can work this out.

Keep knitting until the pouch will wrap round the ipod fairly snugly - this is the reason for knitting sideways as garter stitch is more stretch sideways and if a close fit it won't fall off.

Cast off, sew cast on to cast off row (makinga tube). Then sew across one end to make it a pouch.

Thanks!! I will have to add a few stitches (was working to it's width... oops - at least I've only knitted two rows lol lol

I will see how it goes... I'm trying to keep the wool the same taughtness in my hand but it's really hard

got a few days yet to get it right lol lol
