Crochet, have mastered some stitches, BUT...

I can't understand the instructions on a pattern I have bought...

it says
Make 2 ch

Round 1 4DC in second ch from hook
Round 2 2DC in each st (8sts)
Round 3 2DC in next st, 1dc in next, rep to end
Round 4 2dc in next st 1dc in each of next 2 sts rep to end

it goes on but I can't get my head round how to start.

I can chain stitch single and double crochet and DC means DC but it is the getting startedbit that I am stuck with.

what is the 2CH it asks me to do first and if it is a chain how long should I make the chain?

sorry if this is all really muddled... just can't fathom it..

I am going to do the school run and will check back in later, Thanks in advance.

is this amigurumi? it's worked in the round, right? (no ch, turn in instructions) it's going to make a conical shape.

start with a chain 2 stitches long (=make 2ch)

make 4dc all into the same stitch, the first one in the chain, not the one next to the hook (=round 1)

when you've done this get a paperclip that you've half opened out (or use a safety pin) and slip it into the top of the first stitch, to mark the beginning of the round. you move this up a row each time.

DON"T turn the work, just make the next stitches into the top of the first stitch of the previous round (the one with the marker). make 2 stitches into each of the 4 of the previous round (=round 2)

hope that makes sense, give me a shout if you need help with the rest.

tutorial 6 stitches makes a flatter/rounder, rather than pointier shape. single crochet in the states = dc over here. she doesn't use a marker but i find it really helps.
