Best teach-yourself-to-crochet book?

I have just bought Debbie Stoller's Happy Hooker, which looks great but I'm failing at the first hurdle when I try to crochet into the first chain. I just don't quite understand what she's saying (despite the fact she gives three methods for doing it).
Any good books or online tutorials out there?
I've been knitting for years but fancy crocheting lots of pretty flowers .

I follow a few craft websites, either for inspiration, tutorials or simply to think "wish I could do that!"

With that in mind does this one help in any way?

I have a knitting one - Patons, I think? They also had a crochet one in the shop, which I didn't buy. But the knitting one is great and the crochet one looked good as well.

have you tried looking for a tutorial on youtube?

bamboobutton · 11/11/2009 18:39

my sister has crochet for dummies

she is now a master at crochet.

Thanks for all your suggestions, I will look on youtube and might try and find a copy of the Patons book or crochet for dummies. I did find some step by step photos on the internet that look quite helpful so I will persevere!

I have taught myself to crochet this year using The Encyclopedia of Crochet Techniques

I asked for this one and The Happy Hooker for Christmas last year so I could learn to crochet and although I like th Happy Hooker, it uses the US terminology and I found the Encyclopedia easier to use as well as using UK terminology.

I found that I needed someone in person to show me initially, but once I had learn the very basics it was much easier to teach myself anything else from books and online. Do you know anyone who crochets who could give you an hour's tutorial? Any groups near you?

My mum crochets, although as far as I'm aware she is in granny-square only mode but she is a granny to 5 with two more on the way so I guess that is fair enough. I wanted to try and learn without asking her so I could surprise her with something beautiful. She did try and teach me years ago but I can't remember much about that.
bamboo Crochet for Dummies arrived yesterday, I also ordered Knitting for Dummies and learned a few things just very quickly flicking through that one, so hoping that the crochet one will be as useful as the knitting one seems to be.
