What goes with the colour 'teal'?

We are inheriting, in a modern house darkish reddy brown laminate flooring in the living areas with a - well, darkish green stone effect fire place surround. The current owners have complemented with teal and the odd dash of orange. The teal is effective but I can't go 'orange' as NOTHING I have goes there! What should I do with teal in mind? I'm thinking of the curtains and cushions, and maybe a suite. I'd even go a feature wall in the 'right' colour! What matches, complements and should never been seen with reddy brown and teal?

What do you think?

cerise would look good

or tone it down with cream

lime green is being matched with it in all John Lewis's new range - look online at teal cushions and you'll see a good range of matching colours in cushions/rugs

There's a very good Kevin McCleod book about colour schemes. I think it would be safe, if a littly chilly to go with a paler shade of teal (eau de nil perhaps). I quite like a purpley shade with teal, like raspberry or plum but I think that might look bad with the flooring.

chocolate or cream

taupe

southeastastra · 18/09/2009 19:58

like this is that the sort of teal?

TokenFemale · 18/09/2009 20:52

chocolate brown - like this

faraday · 19/09/2009 18:04

yes, SE-astra, perhaps not as lurid as Token's but I'd still eat the cake!

Yes, I'm thinking chocolate brown. The floor (laminate) is almost there.

And a complementary colour? One with a bit more warmth perhaps?

I was going to suggest purple, I've just done a collage at art club with teal and purple and they suit very well.

red looks lovely with teal but it is not subtle!

Chocolate brown, cream or gold. Paler/darker versions of the same shade will also work.

We have just decorated in teal from laura ashley - sofa, wallpaper etc. Cream is lovely, as is pink, beige and white looks fab!

Well, my answer might be a bit too late. But pale yellow walls and a dark green suite would be fabulous. leather suite would make your sitting room luxurious.

nickelbabe · 14/11/2009 11:52

i would recommend cream, chocolate brown, or maroon.
