How can you make an old cheap pine chest of drawers

...into something with an antique distressed finish?

Do you just sand and repaint? Any tips on doing this.

I think i've seen it done by painting it a dark red or brown first then over paint in cream/white and sanding over the corners and areas that would be naturally exposed to wear and tear.

For a wooden finish:

My DH made some bookshelves from new timber, he then got an old chain and thrashed it about the place. Then he rubbed in an antique pine wax. It looks great.

Thanks for those tips. Painting it dark first and then sanding to show the dark underneath the white, makes perfect sense.

I have a cabinet from the Pier as my sample to copy. And that is how it appears.

I am looking forward to doing it now.

Ifyou paint it dark (you can use any colour you fancy, green is often nice or even leave it plain) then rub a wax candle where there would be 'wear' on the corners along edges etc, then paint creamy over the top.

The cream paint won't stick where the wax is so you will only need to rub when it's dry rather than sand
