Acrylic paint on canvas and then framed behind glass, or do I need a different paint?

I got the idea on here about footprints on material ad then framed so I'm going to do it for DH for father's day (aaaah!).

BUT the man at the framing shop said that I need a fabric that is up for being stretched and recommended canvas (I was going to use muslin ). I was thinking fabric paint BUT I don't have any but I have loads of acrylic paints.

I don't want to have to varnish it afterwards although I could do I suppose!

You shouldn't need to frame acrylic behind glass. Yes, I'd use canvas, and get a ready stretched bit from an art shop, it is tricky to stretch it yourself if you are a novice.

Thank you for replying - I have realised that I will ened a non-toxic paint if I want to paint my children's feet (2 and 9 months) won't I? I'm also wanting to use black paint which I think is the most toxic of them all?? I can find non-toxic finger paint - do you think that would work and what sort of varnish would I use??

BS... I have done similar things as gifts in the past. Acrylic paint should be fine to use. I don't know about different amounts of toxicity in different colours?

Do you want to do this on canvas? I am thinking about the logistics of getting a little foot flat on to a raised canvas? Could you make a print on paper and then put it in a frame?

Have a bucket of soapy water and a towel ready .
