Dying terry toweling and muslin? Advice please!

So, I've washed the old terry and muslin nappies a few times, and some are still a bit stained, but not worn out by any stretch. So I was wondering about dying them all different colours.

Has anybody done this? What is your favourite dye? It would obviously need to be something very permanent, preferably non-toxic (!) and that wasn't affected by contact with urine and faeces. Has anybody tried doing this with those machine dyes, and if so, do you have to be careful about what you put in the machine afterwards?

Yes, I did it with my terries, and my friends have now shamelessly copied me and died theirs and their muslins. We tie-dyed some muslins for fun with the children too. We used the dylon stuff. Just follow the instructions, and do several machine washes with old towels in to ensure all the dye's gone before you put your nice clothes in it again

i do this too witn muslins so i can see where they are! ours are tie dyed pink and blue. we had great fun doing it! its really easy bucket, dye, stick for stirring and cold seal stuff!

Oh yes, forgot to say I dyed our terries in the machine, but did the tie-dying in a bucket so would prob do that in future to avoid the washing macine problem!

Thanks ladies! I bought four different colours of machine dye (blue, green, yellow and orange) today for my 39 nappies (mostly inherited from relatives and friends) and am really looking forward to revamping them.

My antenatal group did this in the back garden last summer! We tie-dyed loads of muslins and vests with Dylon Cold Dye (this is easy to use but now discontinued - WHY?? - but you can find the little tins on ebay). You can now buy larger packs of Dylon for tie-dye - can't remember offhand what it's called, but think it still uses cold water. Universal dye?

We used marbles, bulldog clips, beads, etc, all rubber-banded in, and a year on we're still proudly using our unique muslins. It's addictive, so watch out!

I use dylon hand dyes to jazz up white baby vests and sleep suits (and muslins). Turns inexpensive ones into great gifts! Much more practical too as they never stay white, do they?
