Can anyone help me cast on and cast off? (knitters- not boat people- castaway style!)

Hello,

Erm I can knit, learnt as a teenager but erm never really got the hang of casting on and off so my mum always had to do it for me!

Anyhow I am having a real knitting urge following a bereavment and think knitting therapy is really going to help me! (I can only knit in a straight line so mainly will be making terribly dull scarfs!) so I was wondering if anyone could teach me how to cast on and off as my mum isn't local and its probably time I learnt how to do that bit!

to cast on you need to loop the wool round the needle you are casting onto and then when you come back over you knit as normal. if its the first stitch (when you start make it a knotted loop. to cast off you loop the wool round the needle and then slip the stitch after it over it and keep repeating that! its really difficult to describe! sorry

make your loop on to the left hand needle, then knit into it as if you are doing a stitch but instead of letting this stitch drop down, place it on to the needle along with the first stitch you made. Then just keep doing this until you have the number you need.As dli said its hard to explain it,but hope this helps

ooops threads all moved on while I was writing last one! Thankyou so much for all the help.

Was sadly an MMC at 10 weeks (but emby died at 6 weeks). Have vague plan to do a patchwork wool baby blanket for the future eventual baby that will be fine and grow properly.

Am very excited now and gives me a focus- yippee!

sorry to hear about your sadness, but noticed you want to make a blanket, whilst i dont want to confuse you ,have you ever tried crochet ?? its very easy and grows quickly,i have recently made two for my gd,s to put on their beds ,they are on my profile if you want to see them.

Thandeka · 30/04/2009 22:32

Crumbs they are great blankets Mummylin! Be very proud!

I am familiar with what a crochet hook looks like and possibly I tried it once but wouldnt have a clue where to start. But oooh that is a good idea too.

Think will get back to grips with knitting and then expand my repertoire.

Huzzah.

Hi

This book is quite good. My DH bought it for me and has some good diagrams in. Pop down to your local library and they should have some knitting books with diagrams in to help and plenty of into on different types of wool and patterns to make it interesting.

Good luck I hope you enjoy it and I'm sorry to hear about your saddness.
