Can anyone recommend a book I can send my 17 yr old niece who likes sewing and crafty stuff? It's for her birthday so ideally something glossy, hip and on trend.

There is a book i have got out of the library a couple of times called "yeah, i made it myself" by Eithne Farry (i think?) really good as it shows you how to make clothes without patterns and is quite a "young" book iyswim.

Can I hijack this thread to see if anyone can recommend a book with fabric projects for 8-11 years olds? thank you

Try 'Sew U' by Wendy Mullin, who has her own label 'Built by Wendy'. It comes with patterns for trousers, skirt & shirt and info on how to create different looks from these basic patterns,

Oh yes, that is a good book too but not so 'trendy' as the other one, but it is very straight forward and very explanatory (is that even a word? )

Amy Butler has written a couple of great books with sewing projects for clothes/home that are really modern and fresh-looking - try Midwest Modern or InStitches.

She also does sewing kits, funky printed fabric and the like, they're stocked in my local John Lewis.

THanks very much - will check these out too.

is Kath Kidston funky enough? Her book 'Make' is fantastic, if you dont like the designs the techniques are good.

Seriouscase have a look at the usbourne books - learn to knit, things to sew here, they are pretty simple but lovely, I have made stuff from them myself

Its worth having a look at the book people for craft books, they dont always have lots but sometimes you can strike lucky and get them really cheap

thanks GG, will have a good 'rake' through their website.
