Anyone ever made a kari-me wrap-type sling?

I baulk at paying £50 for what is essentially a length of fabric, but am a bit nervous about just buying 5m of cotton jersey in the hope that it will do the same thing. Anyone ever made their own wrap sling? What did you make it out of? I am a reasonable sewer, so I am not afraid of having to hem/taper.

I've made a pouch sling and it was a piece of cake. IIRC, you can make a wrap sling without having to sew at all.

Thanks, I've seen that link, which made me thing I could do it, but just wondered if anyone had actually done it. I have a (bought) pouch sling already, but my dd didn't like it when she was super-small and I thought it would be nice to have a wrap for the newborn phase for the next one, due in a few weeks.

Buy a wrap sling- copy measurements, instructions and fabric and then return item and get your money back- or is that a bit cheeky?

Yes, I made one after trying on a Kari-Me. It was successful enough to be used and lent out to friends, but the things I would do better next time are:
Not make it too long - think mine was nearer 6m cos I made it when pregnant and overestimated.
Buy very light jersey fabric. What felt substantial and stretchy on the roll turned out to be quite thick when you're wearing it. But I had trouble finding any jersey fabric at all because a lot of fabric shops these days are for upholstery not dress making.
Not bother edging it - I spent ages using the elastic hem stitch on my machine and in retrospect, the edges tend to roll under and not fray when it's worn.
HTH.

Hi I am pretty amateur at sewing, but I made a ring sling (using the site www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/Baby/index.html ) and I also made a wrap out of some material i got in africa that women use to carry their babies (which wasn't the purpose I originally bought it for), it's kind of like thick muslin. The wrap is basically a length of material and I just sewed two bits together to make it long enough - I overlapped them quite a bit and did several lines of stitching to make it secure. This was useful as the middle part of the wrap was then obvious (it had a pattern down it) which made it easier to put on.

I also made mine a bit long, so i ended up with quite long "tails" which was a bit annoying sometimes.

I think I might try and make another one for new baby that's due soon...thanks for the inspiration!
