Just wondered if anyone has used Folksy website? I've just read about it in a craft mag, looks like you can set up a shop and sell stuff you've made - i've just registered but not put anything on there yet - I make cards and jewellery. Has anyone used it? Thanks

I have a small shop on Folksy with a few bits on (IzzyWizzyBeads) - it seems to be very easy to set up & things do get bought. I've sold about 9 items without really promoting it at all. I'm not sure how well known the site is though if you are not a crafter.

Rosemary - Thanks for the nice comments. It's all self taught! Takes a while to perfect techniques, I'm always learning - I'm nowhere near an expert

Sorry to barge in but I have a question about selling homemade things & was wondering if anyone could answer it. Can you legally sell things that have been made from someone else's patterns?

I'm a knitter but tend to follow patterns like Debbie Bliss. I did think about selling them to make a bit of pocket money but wasn't sure if that's either legal or a bit cheeky.

If anyone can answer it, tia!

Whizzz · 25/03/2009 18:25

I'm not 100% sure about knitting patterns but I know I have seen some craft tutorials that say that they can't be sold & other that have a clause that say you can sell but you have to acknowledge the designer, with sOme you have to pay a licence fee in order to produce items to sell.
So maybe check the small print on the patterns.
The key thing is though to keep records of everything you buy & sell for tax purposes.

Etsy is brill. I haven't tried selling anything on there but there is some great stuff if you want uniqueness and one offs. I got a wedding guest book handmade by a girl in America and it was absolutely fantastic. Much better than going into a shop and buying a mass produced thing.

I've generally found it quite hard to publicly sell my crafts (as there is so much fierce competition) but amongst friends/family and word of mouth it is really great. I do mostly made to order and bespoke things rather than make first, sell later which probably makes it harder. Also, instead of buying gifts for people, I usually make something I think they will like and that's a good money saver

Someone said to me, always wear one of your creations when you go out so that someone might ask where you got it and that too has helped me sell loads. My hairdresser also puts business my way, hope that gives you some ideas

Good luck!!

Thanks Whizz & Pruners, I'll check the small print. I need to improve my knitting before I can start improvising!

Will look at etsy, sounds great!
