Ikea fabric for curtains but can't find lining at same width...

i want to make curtains for the dcs room and put blackout lining in them. ikea fabric seems to be 150cm wide (or 60" is this right?!) but all the lining i can find is 54" (why is fabric always in inches except in ikea?).
what do i do? i am a beginner but believe lining must be same width as curtain. (puzzled face)

Surely you will need a little extra to fold round when you sew them together? iyswim.

You will need to fold the curtain fabric over the lining at the side edges and stitch them down, so you will need some extra.

Most curtain makers join widths or part widths of lining fabric/curtain fabric to get them the right width, it is just another straight seam, so not difficult.

but shouldn't the curtain seams and lining seams match - or it'll harm the 'hang'.
this is what my book says. admittedly it's about 40 years old...

I haven't got my books here, (am at work), but if so, you may have to trim the ikea fabric to the same or similar width to the lining if you want to match the seams. Personally, I prob would not bother. How many curtain fabric widths will you need to join for each curtain?

womblingalong · 12/03/2009 10:19

Do ikea do lining fabric the correct width?

wotnopulling · 12/03/2009 10:20

ahem. i haven't worked that out yet. i'm in dressing gown kids are in bits of pj (some discarded). you are putting me to shame - at work and brain in order!

i'm just shambling around muttering 'why is nothing straghtforward' just like my dear old mum....

You can get 60" wide lining from Dunelm Mill, not sure if its blackout though.

You can either have the linings the same width or have them where the fabric turns back on itself to meet the lining, personally I prefer the latter especially if it's a lightweight fabric.

wotnopulling · 12/03/2009 10:24

thanks - i'll check that out. i have found lightweight lining but not blackout. i need to keep the sun out! (yes, the dcs are vampires)

you will need to fold over the actual fabric so that there is a border of it on the underside, so the lining can be a smaller measurement than the actual curtain fabric. If you're not happy doing that, then you could have a seam in the lining where you join two peices together.
I have to say I agree fre the metric/imperial measurements. I really can't understand why so many fabric sellers sell in inches

I nearly always make my curtains separately from the curtain linings which I put on lining tape - so that I end up with the curtain linings not as gathered as the curtains so that the curtains are less bulky. I then sew the linings to the curtains by hand down the sides - can use quite large stitches (you just need to ensure you know where the linings will be up to when you put the hooks in) - but it means that its easier to wash the curtains at a later stage, and if the lining needs to be replaced first (often the case) I can just put new lining in...

Another approach you could take is to fit a blackout blind on the window frame separate from the curtains. It's quite a good solution - there are times when it is very bright out during summer when we want curtains drawn to cut down the glare but not total darkness. Also nice if curtains are drawn for privacy / getting dressed in daytime not to have sunlight blocked out.

wotnopulling · 12/03/2009 10:55

ta for all replies. that was my starting point laundryfairy but the window doesn't have a recess so blind sits proud of window so no where to put track for curtains cos blind sticks out too much (blackout blind on there now)

You could try using a pole with rings to hook the curtain into instead of a track - you can get brackets to hang the pole from that should be plenty far enough out from the window - or maybe I'm just making things complicated!
