Seamstresses - HELP PLEASE! Stay-Stitch front and back neck edges

I'm -attempting-- to making DD a pinafore dress. I bought a very simple pattern, most of which I can decipher and translate into non-streamstress lingo, but pray tell, what does this mean?

Stay Stitch front and back neck edges?

It doesn't appear to want me to stitch them together, that would make no sense as there would be no hole of DD's head.

Any ideas?

TIA

et voila

it's just to strengthen the curved cut edges so they don;t pull out of shape while you machine them

Thank you so much Mrs Badger. When it says a row of straight stitches, does the mean I should sew in a straight line rather than follow the curve of the neck? Sorry, as you can probably tell I am a complete novice at work here. So, in other words, do a series of straight lines to edge the neck?

Hmm - not so easy to put into words...

No, you need to follow the curve of the neck.
