Making a jumper and the instructions say:

Beg with a k row, work 2 rows in st st.

I know this means begin with a knit row, work 2 rows in stocking stitch. I know that stocking stitch is a knit row followed by a purl row.

Here's where I'm stuck.
Does 'work 2 rows in stocking stitch' mean knit a row, purl a row, knit a row, purl a row' i.e. 4 rows of knitting? or do i only knit one row and purl one row, i.e. 2 rows in total?

i would think the second.... 1 row k, 1 row p = 2 rows in st st....

Missybaby · 27/01/2009 20:54

really? I don't get then why it doesn't just say, knit 2 rows, purl 1 row. seems daft!

yes, the second one.

one row knit and one row purl.

bamboobutton · 27/01/2009 20:57

knit row is the 1st row, so when you have done the second row(purl) you can start row 3 as knit.

hang on. i think then i've been going doubly wrong! so, in fact there are only 2 rows. one row knit, one row purl. this includes the initial 'beg with a k row'. Is that right?

(Thanks for your help. Really don't want to go wrong and am a novice knitter as you can tell!)

yes thats right.

go here if you get stuck again. very useful for beginners.

yup - they're just telling you to start with the knit rather than the purl of the st st.

this site has excellent videos if you get stuck.
