Help!!

My 8 year old son has a Greek day at school next week and has to dress up for the day.

Any ideas for a mum who's not that crafty???

Please

two large pillow cases (or suitably shaped pieces of white/pastel cloth)
two large nappy pins

(sport kit underneath - it is January)

Rope/cord/belt preferably gold/silver/brown

Sandels (not worn by boys much anymore)

Pin at shoulders, wrap belt round middle & tie

Perhaps a few leaves in hair - ala laurel wreath (or is that Roman?)

fryalot · 27/01/2009 15:10

either dress him in a sheet

or buy him a new football shirt

snigger · 27/01/2009 15:11

White tights, big sisters white sundress, and hugggeee pompoms on trainers like this - be prepared for ostracism, alienation, and the ruination of a promising your life, though.

snigger · 27/01/2009 15:12

young life, dammit, young life.

KatyMac · 27/01/2009 15:30

Oh - I was thinking ancient Greek.....no nothing about AD Greece at all

MrsBadger · 27/01/2009 15:53

ancient or modern?

oldcrock · 27/01/2009 15:57

We have a Greek day next week too! They sent home a design for a toga-like outfit made out of a sheet and safety pins. I can really see dd1 agreeing to wear it . Also have no spare old sheets, and I always refuse to buy stuff especially for these kinds of events! Will have to have a rummage for something though...

MaggsS · 27/01/2009 18:06

Are you in the South oldcrock?

Ancient I think.

Thanks plenty of that in the garden!!

How's it going for you oldcrock?

Must go and have a rumage in the charity shops.

lol - complete lack of progress here and we are away this weekend! Dd1 doesn't even want to go as she thinks she'll look stupid!! Oh dear....

MaggsS · 30/01/2009 14:14

My DS who has just turned 8 is the same. Ahh bless

My son went as a pyramid. Was very easy to make (believe me I'm not "crafty" at all) - just a bit of manipulating a cardboard box around him, painting it and stapling him into it.

LongDroopyBoobyLady · 30/01/2009 20:40

Der! Sorry on another planet today, he went as a pyramid on Egyptian day (obviously).

MaggsS · 31/01/2009 06:07

Nice idea though

Could go as Herakles with a 'lion' skin made from some cheapy fur fabric cut to shape, over his shoulders (and school uniform?).

Men wore himations, which you could make with a white sheet wound round him waist and the long end draped over one shoulder. Chilly, though! Could dip-dye one edge of sheet in blue or purple dye, perhaps? Grape vines in hair for Dionysus, could make a matching staff with some vine leaves twined round one end (thyrsus).

CAn you spot the frustrated ex-classics teacher?

(I made costumes for a Greek play at 6th Form once, and it took ages to source enough plain white sheets from charity shops! Could look for plain white fabric at the market, maybe, as it'll be longer.)

MamaHobgoblin · 01/02/2009 14:41

'his' waist. tch.

MaggsS · 01/02/2009 20:15

Thanks. Have been looking for white sheets everywhere. Don't think he would be too pleased if I sent him in with pastal shades.

I finally succeeded in finding an old curtain the right size and colour! Have turned it into the 'chiton' I think... However dd1 is now unwell so I needn't have bothered!!

MaggsS · 02/02/2009 20:54

Oh no!. Hope she is better soon.

Still looking for that white sheet.

How can I send him to school dressed like that in this weather?

my dd dressed up as Athena (goddess of war, wisdom and domestic crafts/weaving) for school last year... dh and I were on the verge of divorce making a helmet out of silver card, it looked fab - google greek gods? then let /encourage your ds to find an easy one to be?

we made my dd a shield as well and she had Athena's broom shaft staff of wisdom and an old nightgown tied at the waist with a shawl attached to the shoulders, it was fairly simple and effective.

(we are not crafty)
