Sewing Virgin - advice on patterns please!

Ok, I have decided to rekindle my girlhood love of making clothes.

I need a hobby that is creative and allows me to switch off from my hectic job.

I would love to start learning how to make clothes for my DD who is 3. Double bubble for me in terms of de-stressing and being able to put some love into making something lovely for her.

I am very rusty, but I sort of think I had a knack for it when I was a teenager which I'm hoping will re-emerge!

I don't have a sewing machine at the moment but am going to borrow my mums until I feel like this is something I'm going to properly get into.

I don't have an overlocker or any of that gubbins.

Am I being completely unrealistic?

I would be grateful if any of you could point me towards a great online pattern store to get me started. I like dressing DD in relatively unusual stuff - pre-credit crunch I bought her stuff on Nordic Kids website, but I also like 70's style blouses, denim dresses and flares. I quite like the idea of a bold patterned pinafore dress as a starting point - seems like this might be one of the easier garments to start on?

Anyway, I'm sure there is a wealth of brilliant seamstresses that lurk in this area (have never posted in this section before!). Please spare a moment to shove me in the right direction.

TIA.

Hi, I am now doing a level 2 in dressmaking and all you need is a basic sewing machine (now is a really good time to get one) and some decent scissors.
www.sewingworld.co.uk has a good load of patterns on it for pretty much everything. Also Ebay is quite good too, i got a load on there for price of postage.
I'm sure if you could do it as a teenager then you will pick it up really easily, bfore i started my level 1 i had never used a sewing machine before. Also, John lewis stock patterns and are quite helpful with fabric etc. good luck

alicecrail - will a level 1 be for total beginners who have never even realised clothes were made from fabric [hopeful emoticon]
