Would anyone be interested in knitting me a all-in-one baby wrap?

Hello,

I would like to buy a baby wrap or cocoon to use to pop a newborn baby into for photographs. Quite a few people make them in the States for photographers, but I haven't found anyone who sells them here.

If anyone might be interested I can link to some pictures, and I've found a link for a pattern if necessary.

I am very excited that so many people think it would be possible. I have no idea how one chooses who to do it - is there an accepted method for choosing? (There may also be a few other photographers who might be interested - I haven't seen anyone selling them in the UK.)

MOlesworth - yes, it is gorgeous isn't it?
Solo, I haven't got a date when I need it by at the moment.
gg - I have much less idea than you about measurements unless that pattern has some guidelines. I also don't know about wool, though it talks about thick and thin wool on some of the links. It wouldn't be something for the baby to wear all the time - just an hour or so for one photoshoot, if that helps.

Solo - can see your profile pics now - your stuff looks lovely

Molesworth · 13/01/2009 19:10

I should think you could make one of these out of any gauge of yarn - the main thing is that it's super, super, super soft! Something like superfine merino, silk or cashmerino?

solo · 13/01/2009 19:11

Thank you! all made up patterns too!

Molesworth · 13/01/2009 19:12

Impressed that you made up your own patterns! I was thinking of starting a thread re: making up a pattern for a knitted beard ( yes, weird I know). Surely it can't be that hard?

solo · 13/01/2009 19:16

Molesworth, that would make it very expensive! and if it was just for a photo shoot, I'd say there are lots of man made and mixed yarns that would be fine, it would only have a naked baby in it for a very short time. The pale pink I used was exceptionally soft, but man made.

If there is no need for it in a weeks time, I would happily do it for you brokenrecord. I've got a busy week this week, but otherwise...

gigglinggoblin · 13/01/2009 19:17

The name appliques are lovely soho.

I just meant the yarn will affect the number of stitches etc on the pattern , you could do it with any gauge and then use different sized needles to create a holey fabric or the right size for a thicker fabric, the thick thin wool has been used on the links as it gives that look that its not uniform all over.

Am fairly sure a knitted beard is possible too, I have been knitting cakes recently and now I have discovered crochet so have managed a carrot and strawberry, am sure a beard is no harder!

Am more than happy for soho to make it, I have a friend having a baby soon and thought about making her one so this caught my attention! Not sure how long it would last if only used on one baby tho.

solo · 13/01/2009 19:17

In reality, it would only take a few hours to make, but finding the right yarn would take the time and effort IME.

Molesworth · 13/01/2009 19:18

I just made some fingerless mittens in a gorgeous silk/merino mix yarn - only about a fiver a ball, so the cocoon would cost no more than a tenner?

solo · 13/01/2009 19:19

Soho? what are you saying gigglinggoblin? ...SOLO

gigglinggoblin · 13/01/2009 19:22

flip

sorry soLo, have got wool on the brain, have got some lovely debbie bliss soHo in pink that is thick and thin would make a nice cocoon, thats what I was thinking of.

solo · 13/01/2009 19:22

Isn't that quite fine though? You wouldn't want the cocoon to be in a fine yarn as it would look like a fishnet stocking! now there's a thought!!!

solo · 13/01/2009 19:22

Lol! there used to be a Patons Solo too!

Molesworth · 13/01/2009 19:23

the silk/merino yarn is DK - but yes, you're right, the yarn used in the photos posted here has been chunkier thick/thin stuff

solo · 13/01/2009 19:34

I don't mind if you want to do it. I've got loads to do already anyway, so up to you...

brokenrecord · 13/01/2009 20:08

Thank you everyone. (I've never got so many replies for one of my topics - will have to post on arts and crafts again.)

I did a google for thick and thin wool when I saw the pattern and some wool came up that looked a bit like what they had used I think.

I have no idea how to decide which person to ask to do it... I have had a look at gg and solo's profile pics and they are amazing, also Molesworth has been very helpful - I have no preference whatsoever. What do people normally do? If no answer I'll choose a name at random.

(Molesworth - a tenner would only cover the wool if it's £5 a ball, not the knitter's time.)

Well who is nearer to you geographically?

brokenrecord · 13/01/2009 20:14

I'm in London.

If more than one person was interested in doing it I have a strong feeling that there would be someone out of my friends who would also like to buy one if the price was reasonable.

Talking of wool - I have just picked up my scarf which is knitted in something that looks suitable - god knows where the wool is from. It is synthetic I think - very soft and quite stretchy, with thin wool and then very thick clumpy bits - all a bit fluffy too...

gigglinggoblin · 13/01/2009 20:44

Tbh I have no idea how big to make it, I would need to measure a baby and there are none available near me for a few months! Solo if you figure it out I would be v grateful if you could give me baby measurements so I could make one for my friend

Brokenrecord it might be worth you having a look online or in wool shops for you to find the wool you want as you cant decide how many stitches are needed until you know what you are working with. Beware - I can be there for hours, they are all so strokable! Dont get sucked into a woolly black hole

Molesworth · 13/01/2009 21:19

I'll have a look in peter jones next time I'm in there for some thick/thin wool. I'm in London too but as I said before, I'm not sure my knitting skills are up to it without seeing the pattern first.

Re: sizing, I would have thought that using large needles (it looks to me like it has been knitted on large needles?) and a suitably soft yarn gives a soft, stretchy result that would fit all but the biggest or smallest babies.

brokenrecord · 13/01/2009 21:31

Ok, thank you. The pattern is now listed as sold out - I don't know why.

I think that I could tuck a baby into a long kind of hat shape and see if that worked. Is it ok if I email you when I decide how do it?

What a lot of messages for this. I was a bit afraid that it wouldn't be possible for a non-Ravelry member to get into downloading a pattern. It looks though as if you've got quite a way with getting your cocoon. Let me know if it gets stuck anywhere, then I can download the pattern for you if you send me £1.50 on PayPal. That will tell you what yarn you need too. It is very easy to spend an awful lot of money on these things, but there are all kind of ways round it.

brokenrecord · 14/01/2009 12:55

Thank you Dutchoma. You are right about the Ravelry site - I couldn't even see the pattern - just their homepage. We will soldier on for now but I will let you know if it would be good to try that pattern. (Does it look similar to some of the pictures in the links?)

What is the best way to get back to you? I can just post on this thread or maybe email you if necessary.

OP posts:
DutchOma · 14/01/2009 13:40

Had another look at it and have just discovered that it is done in crochet. See how it goes with the other people and maybe we should have another look at it if you get too stuck. There is another one, but that has no picture and need $12 for the download.
Yeah right.
