Was thinking of getting DD a chalkboard or whiteboard for her birthday on Friday but will she be too young?

Would love to get her one of those paper boards and some paint but I'm pretty sure she's too young for that.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Or just tell me I'm being stupid!! lol

Anyone about?

i prefer to do toddler crafts at the table with them strapped in high chair - if they can wander they'll redecorate

tbh i did very little before 18 months or so, before that they do tend to eat everything, although yoghurt makes good "paint" for tinies. my 18mo has just stopped eating chalk all the time and started drawing with it. felt tips she still mostly paints herself. "sticking" is popular, but she mostly sticks things down, peels off and resticks to herself/table. crayons she also mostly ate until a couple of months ago. playdough is her absolute favourite thing right now.

i would say start with the less destructive/edbile things like aquadraw/magnadoodle, possibly stickers (dd can get v tantrummy with them as she likes to peel and restick and gets cross when they lose their stickiness).

Thanks Puppy - I thought it may be too young but I'm so crap at arts that I wanted to give her a headstart! lol.

we've got some lego so I might start bringing that out more as at the mo its tucked away in the corner.

i don't think it's necessarily too young to introduce craft stuff (my dd is no. 2 so we have it all knocking around anyway), but perhaps too young to a) leave her unsupervised or b) expect her to know what to do with it

At our nursery they do loads with them, but we've been less successful at home. She got sent home with a 'drawing' when she was just under 1, I got all excited and brought crayons and a colouring book (wilkinsons sell very cheap art stuff) but she just ate the crayons.
Now that she is 14mo she does get that she can make a mark and quite enjoys a quick scribble, but still likes to chew as well.

Nursery sent a photo home at Christmas (dd 13mo at that time) of her in a highchair clearly having a whale of a time (or should that be wail? any pendants?) sucking at a blue paintbrush - it's adorable. I agree highchair and possibly aquadraw would be safer atm.

hmmm, ok maybe I'll start to bring it out then but I'll "safe proof" the house first. She's already got one of those all over bib type things that is used for painting so maybe i'll use that for it.

Do you think colouring pencils would be safe for her? I dont want her to eat stuff in case it harms her belly.

aquadraw or a tub full of dried pasta or supervised gloop.

edible playdoh...

flat tray of paint and huge roll of ikea paper or wallpaper lining for hand and feet prints.

that's about it tbh.

my mil still has nightmares about lurid green paint handprints all over the walls.

LuckySalem · 11/01/2009 14:42

OK well as Aquadraw is mentioned alot i'll have a look for it, Never heard of it before.

Like the pasta idea although as she LOVES eating it I may have to watch her! lol

yes, don't add glitter or paint/ glue to it until she's got past that stage lol!

madwomanintheattic · 11/01/2009 14:47

aquadraw is very funny, because drool makes pictures too...

LuckySalem · 11/01/2009 14:49

Oh I love that idea.

There is some pens you can get to draw in the bath do you think that would be safe for her as she LOVES the bath. I dont know what they're called or anything, I just remember seeing them once when she was about 8 months old and thinking they'll be great when she's older.

ELC sell them, I think that anything that is advertised for under 3's is safe to chew. I did initially worry about dd eating crayons, but then I figured there must be thousands of children munching crayons it must be ok. [terribly well researched risk assessment doncha think)

madwomanintheattic · 11/01/2009 15:01

i don't like the bath pens because mine have quite sensitive skin, and they irritate their exczema, the same happens with that weirdy squirty foam soap that you can mould into shapes and then wash with...

i didn't like the idea of teaching kids to write on the walls really either lol, but i guess it's ok if you make sure they understand the limits... i know, it's weird, i don't have the same hang-up about covering the floor in paper and getting them to walk in paint lol...

(i'm a bit weird - i felt the same way about chocolate coins for toddlers - which nut decided it was a good idea to teach kids to eat money lol...) that said, mine scoff choc coins like the best of them these days, whilst the real money gets stashed in the corner of bedrooms to be 'found' when a trip to the shops might be on the horizon...
