what thread to use when sewing a quilt?

i've got lots of polyester thread - is that ok to use when sewing up cotton?

You need quilting thread. It is much stronger than ordinary thread. it is a bit expensive but it really lasts for ages. you should be able to buy it in most fabric shops.

I should have said you can use ordinary thread when you are sewing your fabric pieces together. But you need the quilting thread when you are doing the actual quilting and sewing through 3 layers.IYSWIM.

If you're just sewing the pieces together (patchwork) then it's best to use cotton with cotton. Polyester is stronger than cotton and over time the thread may wear away the cotton at the seams and tear through your fabric.

argghghghghghghg i've just done LOADS of stitching with polyester...

ah well. i'll continue, but next time i'll know better.

so quilting thread eh?

is there a particular quilting website that you use for buying this stuff?

This place is lovely, very good service villavin but don't think they have a lot of thread. Sale starts jan 15th though!

I use poly thread. But I also machine quilt.

For supplies, how about the cotton patch? Not cheap, but find me a supplier that is...
