Knitting/craft bags

My sil has decided she is going to take up knitting, great i thought i'll get her a knitting bag for christmas. Had a look around but no luck finding a suitable one as they all seem to have old fashioned designs. Where can i find one that doesn't look like a granny should own it?!

www.folksy.com/shops/Nicsknots I love these ones (she has a shop on Etsy too with more designs in)

I am always struck by the fact that arty crafty creative people don't make their own knitting bags. Making a bag is one of the easiest sewing jobs there is. You could design it just how you like it and it would cost a fraction of the price you pay in the shops.

I was at the knitting and stitching show in Harrogate the other day and amused myself by trying to spot someone in the crowds who was actually wearing something they had made or designed themselves. It took some time. (pet gripe emoticon]

They were selling some fabulous knitting bags, it quite inspired me to get making. I did not feel like spending £40 on one.

well i just use a normal bag, tbh.

What do you require in a knitting bag?

I only use a bag for projects I carry out of the house, and they tend to be small so I just use whatever is to hand.

I made my sister a knitting bag and knitting needle roll for her birthday. Including cutting it took about 2 hours!

Cath kidson?

here?

Or is that exactly what you mean by old fashioned designs?

Pigleto - I was at the Harrogate knitting & stiching show too (went on the Saturday).

I was one of the folk not wearing anything handmade .

To be fair though I don't knit (I can knit but very slowly). I crochet but tend to do hats and stuff for preemies.

I keep making the fatal error of buying ONE skein of yarn that I like then saying wtf am I gonna make with this amount of yarn

I also think that some knitters won't also be sewers, so won't have sewing machine, etc. and would perhaps prefer to spend their time knitting than sewing.

Mind you I wouldn't oay £40 for a knitting bag

pay

Any good?

pigleto · 28/11/2008 09:31

I love the idea of crocheting premie hats, do you work in that area? Most of my crochet projects end up enormous and having to be unpicked, I wouldn't inflict them on anyone I wasn't related to.

One skein of yarn is not going to go very far but I quite like crochet jewellery, if it is a nice colour. Or I make squares which I store for some point in the future when I can think of something to do with them.

You don't need a machine for a bag, a needle and thread are fine. You could even knit one.

No, I don't work in that area. I'm a work at home mum (sell baby stuff and handmade jewellery, felt stuff, a few other bits).

When I started learning to crochet I found preemie hats were a good way to learn stitches & crocheting in the round, I could finish them fairly quickly so it kept me motivated and felt worthwhile doing it iykwim.

Thankyou so much for your suggestions, i will have a browse through them when i have a min! I actually had my work at the knitting & stitching show a few years ago and can't knit or sew! i would be absolutely rubbish at making a bag for sil as i work in clay! my pots were the only ceramics in the show

ah it occurs to mr that I do most of my knitting on either circulars or dpns, so I don't tend to need a special bag

its a lovely idea though, i'd be really happy if someone thought to put me together something like that

blithedance · 02/12/2008 21:33

I just need a big bag, as I tend to work on sweaters and carry the whole lot around. I bought MIL one a bit like this as a knit bag, and liked it so much I went back to Paperchase to get one of my own.
My one had a couple of inside pockets.
