knitting pattern for muffler/ short scarf? what are they called??

i saw a woman wearing a handknitted thing which is like a very short scarf. it basically goes just round your neck and crosses over in front. one end feeds through a slit in the other end. the whole thing must have been about 25" long at most.

thought i might be able to find a pattern for one online but don't know what to search for! anyone got any idea what they are called? thanks for any ideas

Saw something very similar at a craft fair recently, but they were fastened with a jazzy button (chunky wool and quite loosely knit so no need for a buttonhole as the button just pushed through).

That wouldn't need a pattern at all, but they were being sold as mufflers, so maybe search for that?

that's a cool idea bocca! i have started just knitting and seeing how it goes, lol. but was hoping to find something with e.g. interesting stitches - i'm not too good at making that up.

ooh thats nice

My mother in law did some last year, really nice, she used chunky rowan and just did plain knit the folded the end over and sewed it together so it made the loop then put some fake chunky buttons on and then you just threaded the end through the loop around your neck

hmm that sounded clear not, but they look great on really good for kids also

asicsgirl · 19/11/2008 19:35

that is very clear! what a good idea. i am doing mine with increasing / decreasing at the ends to make points, and plan to go and look up ( - i am so rusty) how to do a long buttonhole for the end to go thru. just garter st as very chunky boucle type multicoloured wool. we'll see how it turns out!

Glad you said that, I was trying to think how else to explain it

let us see wont you when finished

I'm just finishing one off for a gift. I made it up as I went along.

Anyone know where to get lovely, but inexpensive buttons from?
