Sentimental about baby things

Are you sentimental about your baby things? Do you find them hard to let go? I'm writing about this and would love to find mums who feel as I do about this .

I'm hopelessly sentimental about most stuff especially baby stuff. Our loft is jam packed with toys and clothes I can't bear to get rid of (though I think DH secretly chucks stuff out while I'm not looking).

I have a box of stuff which he is never to touch on fear of his life which includes:

  1. all baby scan pictures (I had loads)
  2. the pregnancy test I used (I know, its euch!)
  3. the first babygrows they wore
  4. the first vests they wore
  5. cardigans knitted by my MIL (they're family heirlooms now!!)
  6. The wrist and ankle tags they had in hospital
  7. all cards (and a deflated balloon)
  8. Other stuff I'm too to admit too

My house is a complete tip!

Writing about this where?

MorocconOil · 18/11/2008 11:46

I have kept my favourite clothes, thinking I will give them to my DC for their DC. DH thinks I am insane as we have a cupboard bulging with stuff. He says they will not want to dress their DC in 20 year old+ clothes made in China . I just can't bear to throw out hand knits, tiny hardly worn baby grows and very cute pinafores and dungarees.
I will not be able to get rid of our favourite hardbacked picture books eg Where the Wild things are, The Very Hungry Caterpillar etc

I'm not so sentimental now that DD is 2 - I think the hormones have worn off! But I was ridiculously attached to all her clothes when she was tiny. I'd get really upset if someone bought her something and I didn't like it.

Now whenever my or DH's parents get out a toy or book they've kept for 20 / 30 years I love it. I'll definitely keep some of the better things to hand down.

I am like this and have to stop as it is getting out of hand. I have a 1 and a 3 year old and have every birthday card, party invite, birth card, Xmas card, Easter card, Thank you card ever written to them or about them plus every drawing ds1 has ever bought home from nursery. Also first dummies, toothbrushes, baby tags, first shoes and, this is the worse, every daily "what your kid did at nursery today" sheet. It is getting out of hand already. I need to throw some away, especially the nursery cheets which are probably about some other child most of the time. I mean, will an adult man really want to look back at how many poos he did a day when he was in the baby room?

MorocconOil · 18/11/2008 12:04

Matback, I've got all that kind of stuff too. The DC often have a root in the attic, and appear clutching a pile of 4 year old cards, saying 'why have we still got these'. They seem to quite like me keeping their old things though.

HensMum · 18/11/2008 12:10

MatBackFeck, I'm keeping DS's daily nursery sheets too! To be fair, he's only been there for less than 3 weeks so we don't have too many so far. Maybe I'll just keep the first one and stick it in his baby book.

MatBackFeck · 18/11/2008 12:31

My ds1 has been there 3 years!! He is just leaving. I too am really trying to just keep the first one and was on the verge of throwing the rest out when ds2 started. Then I felt guilty about only keeping one lots so I have just been filing them and putting off the decision. Now I am thinking maybe could keep first and last. Or first and ;ast from each room. I am truly pathetic - my sisters, who are ruthless, are always having a go at me about it. I also cannot give/throw away anything anyone gives me as a present even if it is vile so I have a load of hideous ornaments etc hidden in the spare room.

blueshoes · 18/11/2008 12:58

freshprincess, I put almost all you describe in a nice baby book, except for clothes which I have only kept 2 or 3.

As time goes on, I get less and less sentimental. I purge all old clothes now to charity shops, eBay, bin. Just take lots of photos.

dizzyday07 · 18/11/2008 16:18

I have kept scan photos, hospital tags, congratulations on birth cards, christening cards, first babygro, christening outfit, first shoes, birthday & christmas cards from us and siblings.

Now DD is a pre-school and we get a pile of drawings EVERY day I tend to keep the ones that resemble something tangible and bin the rest. We have a pinboard full of other "makes" that I shall probably keep for a few years yet.
