Is there any point buying a "mini" sewing machine

My MIL has an old manual singer and she said she would do more sewing if she had a sewing machines. Can you do much with the mini ones or should I just go for an entry level normal size? she just wants to be able to make cushion covers, hem trousers/skirts and perhaps make some pinafore dresses for the little ones.

What do you think?

I have a similar one to the one linked above and have sown sofa covers on it - works just fine.

Thanks both, that is the one Thebutterflyeffect, this is the one I was looking at

I perhaps am getting swayed by its cuteness factor!

Why are you thinking of a mini one? is it the cost?

Marne · 16/11/2008 14:15

I have a mini sewing machine and it does most things that a large one can do.

space really solo and the portability of it.

I have a Brother machine that is not huge, but not a 'mini' for sale. I bought it earlier this year to get me out of trouble while my(more professional)machine was being repaired as I was in need of finishing a blanket order. It has been used just that one time, so virtually new. I was going to loft it for Dd when she's old enough, but tbh, machines need using and it would do it no good sitting around the loft for another 8 years!

Solo - I'm looking to muy a basic sewing machine. What is it and how much? Just really need it for the basics. Also roughtly where are you for pickup?

ib · 16/11/2008 19:19

I think that one would be fine for the things you've mentioned.

It has the basics and some fancy stitches ~ zig zag variations rather than fancy. All accessories that came with it, plus all paperwork, instructions etc...In fact I've just got it out of the box and it's all wrapped up in the original poly bag...sad to waste it really, but I like my old machine and I think you get into a bit of a love story with things like sewing machines.
I'd like an offer over £60(was £80 new). I'm near the Dartford Bridge ~ Kent side. Could post it, but it's heavy for the post, so not sure what it would cost.

That sounds like it would have been fine, but you're a bit of a way away from me (I'm in Hants), and I think the cost of postage would make it not really worth it for me.thanks anyway.

No problem!
